Veteran's Day turned out to be a long day for four downtown Willow Glen businesses, when they discovered they had been burglarized during a late night spree of break-ins.
On the morning of Nov. 11, the Fitness Group, Fusion Hair Studio, Villa West Realty and Siam Square discovered their businesses had been burglarized.
Although the San Jose Police Department has not determined whether the crimes were related, vandals forced in the back door of each establishment to gain entry.
Siam Square, located at 1040 Willow Street, has an alarm system, but vandals were able to tamper with the alarm and disable it by cutting the power supply and the alarm's back-up battery, San Jose Police Department spokeswoman Gina Teeporten said. Officers at the scene were able to lift fingerprints, but still have no suspects.
Chai Sainlasiri of Siam Square said he left the restaurant at 10:10 p.m. on Nov. 10, and returned at 9 a.m. He believes the vandals broke in around 3 or 4 a.m., and took nearly $700 from the cash register.
Villa West Realty, at 1110 Brace Ave., is a storage space for Realtor Joe Guerra Sr. According to Teeporten, nothing was stolen but the vandals may have broken into the space thinking it connected to Fusion Hair Studio, at 1112 Brace Ave.
Fusion Hair Studio owner Sherry Hammons said the vandals crowbarred her back door and ransacked the business. However, since all of her staff are independent contractors and take their cash home, the vandals were only able to abscond with a small amount of money. Cutting shears, a leather case, and personal phone book were also stolen from the salon. Hammons said more than $1,000 in cash and stolen goods was taken.
Although police found no usable fingerprints, Hammons said a man who had visited the salon three times in the past week exhibited suspicious behavior. She describes the him as an adult male between 18 to 23 years old, with dark features and a "noveau mohawk" hairdo, about 6 feet tall with a medium build. He came in twice, Hammons said requesting services and then left. The third time, he walked into the salon, Hammons said he peered around and left.
Ron Manicki, who runs the Fitness Group at 1109 Lincoln Avenue, said it also looks like the vandals attempted to crowbar the back door to his store, and eventually broke the glass door to gain entry. Manicki said they tore his office and front desk apart, and took an empty Wells Fargo bank bag and his paper shredder. Police officers were able to get fingerprints from this location but have not yet found the individuals.
"It's more frustrating knowing someone was in here walking around my stuff," Manicki said. "I'm more concerned and worried about it happening again."
