Hurried and harried find a little bit of heaven nearby

Shopping, cooking and partying are all the elements that make the holidays so much fun. They also lead to the most stressful time of the year. But in Willow Glen there's a little place on Lincoln Avenue, south of downtown, that's guaranteed to bring relief to the harried—Heaven Eleven Spa and Hair Studio.

"Divine convenience" is the motto owner Jan Skuba has adopted for the studio, which has been open for about 21 months. Skuba describes her salon as a wellness center which offers a variety of treatments. "It's not just slapping a mask on your face," she said.

Skuba practices an ancient healing science called Ayurvedic. It's an East Indian form of massage that starts with a tummy pack. Skuba said, "You start feeling the heat and then you feel like you're melting into the table." She adds, "The treatments allow people to have more energy and be more creative."

Other forms of creativity in the studio have also added to the ambience. The walls are painted purple and comic green—a hue from the chartreuse family—and are decorated with paintings by local artists. The counters of the salon are also busy with custom jewelry made by Jean Luis Blin of Paris. Skuba describes her place as "Beetlejuice meets Pee Wee's playhouse."

Besides the fun aspects of visiting Heaven Eleven, Skuba and the other therapists say they work to heal the body, mind and soul.

One of the therapists, Carolann Espino, specializes in Reiki, a hands-on treatment that works with the body's energy.

She said, "People come in because their energy is depleted. When I touch you it feels like an electric current is going through your body. It opens up your body's healing energy." If that sounds too far out, Espino explains that Reiki is used on patients at Stanford Hospital's intensive care unit.

If relaxation is the customer's focus, Skuba has an oxygen chamber, often used by athletes, that is designed to relieve anxiety, enhance memory and increase stamina.

Getting a hair cut or having it styled is also part of Heaven Eleven's services. But in between the cut and color, stylist Jamie Bradford-Ivan might be giving a scalp massage. Or, even a foot massage while the customer sits under the dryer.

From hair to face to the entire body, the treatments are designed to de-stress and detoxify while increasing an individual's health. Even cell phones and pagers get turned them off so they don't interfere with the salon's relaxing atmosphere.

Many of Heaven Eleven's services reflect the spa's name. "Stairway to Heaven" includes a lymphatic facial, a body massage, foot reflexology and a body wrap. Lunch even comes with this four-and-half-hour event. "Cloud Nine" is specifically designed to chase away stress and "Heavenly Daze" includes a pressure point massage.

Skuba said, "We try to customize your massage. Some people ask for a deep tissue massage, but they don't really know what it is." To help select the right service, Skuba will do a pre-treatment interview so she can create the right menu of services.

And for those who dread shopping at the mall, Heaven Eleven is an alternative gift giving idea.

"We get a lot of men in here on the day before Christmas," said Skuba, referring to their popular give certificates. Another plus for the men is that the gift certificates aren't dated, so the woman who's getting one doesn't know if it was a last minute thought.

Even before Dec. 25 Heaven Eleven will be providing a bit of relief with its Holiday Open House on Dec. 19. The open house is from noon to 3 p.m.

Heaven Eleven is located at 2119 Lincoln Avenue near Curtner Avenue. For more information call 408.267.6711.
