There aren't many freshmen in the state better than Willow Glen's Mohamed Abdalla when it comes to running cross country.
Many? Make that any.
Abdalla was the top boys freshman finisher at the California State Meet held Nov. 27 at Fresno's Woodward Park when he covered the rain-dampened 3.1mile course in 16:03.
The Willow Glen sophomore finished 60th overall and 17th in the boys Division III final to lead the Rams to a team eighth in the division.
Hot on his heels was teammate Marcos Corona, who ran 16:06 to finish 22nd in the division. Corona was the second-fastest sophomore in the division and the ninth-fastest sophomore in the state. Corona finished 75th overall in the state meet.
The Rams finished just nine seconds behind St. Ignatius in the team standings. Supporting the efforts of Abdalla and Corona were junior Ruben Camacho (50th in 16:53), junior Robert Ramos (59th in 16:59) and junior Justin McArthur (74th in 17:09). Sophomore Samsom Galato and senior Jose Cervantes also competed in the state meet for Willow Glen.
The state showing had to please head coach Victor Santamaria, who will welcome six of his top seven runners back for another season next fall. The Rams won the title for the second straight year in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, then finished second to St. Ignatius in the Central Coast Section Division III meet before winding up eighth in the state.
Hockey all-leaguers
There were several contributing factors to the fine season turned in by Willow Glen's field hockey team this fall. None was bigger, though, than the play of center midfielder Rachel Siehl.
The coaches of the BVAL's West Valley Division recently acknowledged Siehl's season-long efforts by naming her Senior of the Year.
Siehl's stick-handling and passing skills often triggered the attack for the Rams, who put together a 9-2-3 record and edged out Branham for second place in the West Valley Division.
Five other members of coach Samantha Bates' Willow Glen squad earned all-league honors. Seniors Mallory Stein and Laura Black and sophomore Aracely Esquerra were picked to the first team. Senior teammates Dana Samhouri and Danielle Vilkovic were tabbed to the second team.
Three Presentation players also gained all-BVAL recognition. Junior Cayla Derry was picked to the first team, and senior Emily Stewart and sophomore Bridget Moran were named to the second team.
Panthers are all-league
Six Presentation volleyball players and three water polo standouts recently won all-West Catholic Athletic League accolades.
Three seniors--setter Darcy Carroll, outside hitter Kiera Reilly and middle blocker Zoe Beltz--have been named to the first team by the league's volleyball coaches. Three other Panthers--senior Jen Peterson, junior Lexi Hill and freshman Bridget O'Hara--received honorable mention recognition.
Senior two-meter player Julie Oreglia was named to the water polo first team, while senior Katrina Semplenski and junior Amanda Dugoni were picked to the second team.
Rams earn polo honors
Four juniors on Willow Glen's girls water polo team were selected to the All-BVAL Santa Teresa Division team recently.
Utility player Laura Vonstockhaussen and hole set Bonnie LaBaron were named to the first team. Utility player Kelly Green and two-meter specialist Courtney Buchannan were picked to the second team.
