Senior living project at Curci Drive is scrapped, no funding
By Meghan O'Hare
The developers wanted to build an assisted living community for seniors, but it turns out that S.L. Start and Barry Swenson Builder were unable to get financial backing, and had to scrap the project.

The western portion of the 2.8-acre lot, which is owned by S.L. Start, is once again up for sale, according to the developers' land-use consultant Erik Schoennauer.

"At this point, the land is available for someone else to build an assisted living community or other types of housing," Schoennauer said.

The eastern portion of the lot, owned by Barry Swenson Builder, is not for sale. Schoennauer said the developer had not yet determined what would be constructed on that parcel, but offices, houses, or a combination of the two were under consideration.

Schoennauer added that the developers appreciated the support they had received from the community.

"The neighborhood, Councilman Ken Yeager and the city have been extremely helpful," he said. "As different projects come forward, we look forward to working with the neighborhood again to design the next project."

Yeager expressed regret that the project did not come to fruition.

"I was disappointed," he said. "I worked hard with the developer, neighbors and planning department. It was going to be a project that everyone supported, and it would have enhanced the area."

But Yeager said he would support the construction of townhouses, condominiums or another assisted living kind of community. He would not, however, support any kind of high-rise development.
