Diana Schnabel has been thrown into a leadership role on the Willow Glen girls basketball team this season. After all, she is the only senior on a team otherwise dominated by sophomores and juniors.

And last week, Schnabel took her role very seriously.

Schnabel was the leader for the Rams twice last week--topping the club with 13 points in a loss to Branham and leading the club with 17 points in a tight 40-39 victory over Silver Creek.

The split left the Rams 3-3 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Willow Glen, 8-9 for the year, will try to climb back over the .500 mark with a pair of 7 p.m. home games this week. The Rams play host to first-place Santa Teresa (5-0) on Jan. 25 and last-place Independence (0-5) on Jan. 27.

Schnabel set the pace for the Rams in their win over Silver Creek to close out league play last week. She tossed in six buckets from the field and added five points at the free-throw line to lead Willow Glen with 17 points.

Junior Krista Pronge supported with seven points, including a three-pointer, and junior Emily Roberts added six points. Corina Lopez and Stephanie Serna had four points apiece and Michelle Galvis hit two.

The Rams and Raiders locked up in a dead-even first half. Willow Glen led by a point, 12-11, after a period, but it was tied at the half 22-22. Willow Glen stormed in front in the third quarter, outscoring Creek 12-3, but the Raiders fought back in the fourth, only to come up a point short.

Earlier in the week, the Rams fell behind early and never could catch up against the Bruins. Branham led by five after a period and topped the Rams 17-7 in the second quarter to take a commanding 15-point lead in at intermission, 28-13. Willow Glen could never make up the difference.

Schnabel was again the scoring leader with 13 points, getting five at the line, and Roberts supported with 11, also hitting five free throws.

Serna chipped in with six points, Edith Vazquez three, Galvis and Pronge two apiece and Lopez one.

Boys fall to Royals

Junior guard Hiencock Habte pitched in three three-pointers, but the Willow Glen boys lost a lopsided 65-33 decision to first-place Overfelt last week.

The Royals, 5-0 in the Santa Teresa Division, outscored the Rams 16-4 in the second quarter and 20-4 in the third to coast to the victory.

Willow Glen slipped to 2-3 in the division with the loss. The Rams, 6-10 for the year, will be back on the floor for a couple of 7 p.m. road games this week at Prospect (2-3) on Jan. 26 and Independence (0-5) on Jan. 28.

Habte hit the three shots from behind the arc, but that was all he could manage on the night, finishing as the Willow Glen scoring leader with nine points.

Will Robinson chipped in with six points and Steven Skavdahl had a three-pointer among his five points. Lawrence Montepio added four points, Brian Chunn three and Adam Bruening, Ruben Medina and Kyle Schroeder two each.

Soccer team splits

The Willow Glen boys soccer team split a pair of Santa Teresa Division games last week, losing 4-0 to first-place Yerba Buena (6-1) before edging Lincoln (3-4-1) 1-0.

The Rams, 3-3-2 in the division, pulled out the win over the Lions when an assist from Ivan Arias set up Jonathan Rivera for a second-half goal.

Willow Glen had trailed Yerba Buena just 1-0 at the half earlier in the week, but the Warriors poured in three second-half goals to clinch the win.
