Willow Glen Middle to
offer food for thought
Time to power up, Ram style.
On Feb. 5 families of fourth- and fifth-graders are invited to a "Ram Power" breakfast at Willow Glen Middle School. Families with younger elementary school children are also welcome to attend.
The breakfast is an opportunity for families, with children about to enter middle school, to learn about the curriculum at the Willow Glen Middle.
In addition to its science and math through geometry, there are also Spanish, French, band and choir classes.
The breakfast will not only serve a home-cooked style meal, the morning will also serve a healthy portion of tours and information from teachers and parents whose children attend the school.
Willow Glen Middle School's "Ram Power" breakfast is from 9 to 11 a.m. on Feb. 5. There is also is a tour of the middle school scheduled for Feb. 10 from 9 to 11 a.m. Willow Glen Middle School is located at 2105 Cottle Ave.

Business will award its
3rd annual scholarships
Excellence can be measured in many ways and one of those is academics.
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage for the third year will award 11 students from 46 public high schools a $2,000 scholarship through its Path to Excellence scholarship program. The students will be selected from various schools throughout Santa Clara County including Willow Glen High School in the San Jose Unified School District.
Final selections will be made by a committee that includes representatives from the business community, area high schools and colleges and the leadership team of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Silicon Valley.
The scholarships will be granted to the winners upon enrollment in an accredited four-year university of their choice.
The scholarship program is a partnership with local high schools. Principals and faculty at each school will nominate three graduating seniors with excellent records and who have demonstrated an involvement in their communities.

Willow Glen students
use their brain power
Three Willow Glen High School students are preparing for their close-up.
Angelica Montelongo, Ruth Getachew and Kris Johnson will compete on Bay Area Quiz Kids, a game show featuring local high-school students.
During the program, contestants will be asked to answer questions in eight categories: geography, history, literature, math, current events, science and technology and sports. The grand prize will be a trip to Europe.
The show will air Feb. 12 at noon on Channel 4.

Volunteers are needed
for the civil grand jury
Volunteers are needed to serve on the 200506 civil grand jury, announced Alden E Danner, presiding judge of the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara.
Residents who have lived in the county for one year, are United States citizens and are 18 years of age or older, may apply for service. The 200506 term will begin on June 30.
The civil grand jury, as a part of the judicial branch of government, is an arm of the Superior Court and serves as the county's investigative body. It may examine all aspects of county and city government, special districts and school districts to ensure that the best interest of the county's citizens are served.
The amount of time required to serve on the grand jury is significant—a minimum of 20 to 25 hours per week

Yeager takes on a new
role as vice chairman
San Jose District 6 Councilman Ken Yeager has been unanimously elected vice chairman of the Caltrain board for 2005.
Yeager has served on the board for four years and has been involved in the planning of the new Centralized Equipment Maintenance and Operations Facility that is now under construction off Stockton Avenue. The project is slated for completion in 2006.
The Caltrain board has nine members, representing Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco counties. Caltrain operates 86 trains running between San Jose and San Francisco on weekdays. On weekends, Caltrain reduces its schedule to 62 trains.
