Boys basketball

After earning a 24-24 halftime tie against league-leading Overfelt on Feb. 11, the Willow Glen boys basketball team managed just 11 points in the second half and lost 53-35.

The Rams, who were coming off a 39-37 win over Gunderson, led 12-9 after a quarter, but Overfelt gradually pulled ahead and led 36-30 after three quarters. The Royals outscored Willow Glen 17-5 in the final eight minutes.

Hienock Habte and Steven Skavdahl both had 10 points for the Rams, whose record dipped to 6-6 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and to 10-13 overall. Kyle Schroeder scored seven, Will Robinson added six, and Adam Breuning and Brian Chunn chipped in with single free throws.

Willow Glen nailed six three-pointers in the game. Habte and Skavdahl connected on two apiece. Schroeder and Robinson both hit from beyond the arc once.

Baseball showcase

Top 96, a baseball talent organization based in Boston, will hold a college and professional showcase scouting event on June 3 and 5 at PAL Stadium in San Jose. The local event will be one the first of the 16 showcases to be held across the nation this summer.

High school coaches in the area are expected to recommend 800 student athletes, and 144 will be chosen to take part in the showcase that will be attended by college and professional scouts and coaches.

Umpires clinic

The Willow Glen Little League will hold a clinic for umpires on Feb 19, 9 a.m.­noon, at Bramhall Park on Willow Street. The league operates with an all-volunteer umpiring crew in all divisions from the minors to big league.

Girls lacrosse

The San Jose Extreme, a member team of Girls Lacrosse of San Jose, has openings remaining on its high school roster. Practices begin in February and will be held Wednesdays and Sundays at Kirk Community Center on Foxworthy Avenue in San Jose.

The team is open to any girl whose high school does not offer lacrosse as an official sport. No experience is necessary. The cost is $165 per player, which includes membership in the U.S. Lacrosse Association.
