Gunshots resounded through the North Willow Glen and Gardner neighborhoods when an unknown individual opened fire on a house in the 400 block of Jerome Street.
On Feb. 9 at about 10:45 p.m., as three alleged gang members convened around a fire in the backyard, a man on the other side of the property line fired four shots at the group, according to a police report. No one was harmed. The man then fled the area, the report stated.
According to San Jose Police Department spokesman Enrique Garcia, witnesses described the individual as a short Latino male who is 18 to 20 years old.
North Willow Glen Neighborhood Association President Ken Ecklund heard the gunshots and subsequent police helicopters from his home.
"Anytime shots are fired within hearing distance, it's a concern to the neighborhood," he said. "This wasn't just someone firing a gun—they were firing into a backyard. That's reason for concern. But no one got hurt and that is good."
To be safe, Ecklund suggested that residents who see or hear anything out of the ordinary should notify the police.
"At [neighborhood association] monthly meetings, the police always tell us not to hesitate to call them," he said. "If people feel like maybe they should call 911, they should call 911."
However, Ecklund added that citizens of the North Willow Glen and surrounding neighborhoods need not be panicked about gang-related activity in their area.
"Things do happen near our neighborhood, and we need to be aware of our surroundings," he said. "But it's not something for people to get unduly worried about."
