It's that time of the year again when the Rams of Willow Glen pick up the bats and balls and head out to the field.
In girls softball the lady Rams have only four seniors on their squad of 16 but they still have hopes of making their mark in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Topping the list of four seniors is Caitlin Edmunds, a returning all-league catcher for Willow Glen. She's joined on the squad by returning seniors Victoria Porras, Dana Samhouri and Madison Slinker.
Also among the returning players is junior pitcher Michele McCollum, an all-league returner for the Rams. McCollum was named the Sophomore of the Year last spring and was the Freshman of the Year the season before.
Juniors Aurora Donnelly and Nikki De La Roche are other returning varsity players. Donnelly is a second-year varsity second baseman, while De La Roche is a third-year shortstop.
Debra Weaver, a junior, will be playing her first year on varsity as a centerfielder and third baseman and junior Katie Joyce will join Weaver in the outfield for her first year of varsity ball. Jeanette Sulay, another junior, will see action in the outfield and at second base in her first year on the varsity.
"We are looking for a strong season," said head coach Scott McCollum, who will be assisted this spring by Tim Edmunds. "We should be able to contend for the title."
Rounding out the Willow Glen roster are juniors Audre Broers, Jaime Herman, Corina Lopez and Lillian Smith, sophomore Allison Herman and freshman Ritamarie Mendez.
The Rams are coming off of an 8-4 season last year where they finished third in the Santa Teresa Division. They posted an 18-9 overall record.
Willow Glen was to travel to Millbrae to face Mills in a non-league game on March 7 and will face Cupertino on March 9 at home. Games begin at 3:30 p.m. Non-league play continues on March 10 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in San Francisco and March 14 at Los Altos.
The Rams will open Santa Teresa Division play on March 17 at home against Piedmont Hills.
Evergreen Valley, Independence, Andrew Hill and Del Mar round out the six-team division this spring. Each team will play a triple round in the league race.
Rams lose a pair
The Willow Glen baseball team, meanwhile, opened league play last week with back-to-back losses to Westmont in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL.
The Rams opened division play with a 3-1 loss to the Warriors on Wednesday, then fell 8-6 to Westmont on Saturday in a make-up for a Friday afternoon rainout.
The Rams will get back into league play this week, gunning for their first division win when they face Oak Grove in two games. Willow Glen will host the Eagles on March 9 and will visit Oak Grove on March 11 for a pair of 3:30 p.m. games.
The Eagles opened league play last week with a tight 2-1 win over Leland.
In other Mt. Hamilton Division games last week, Leigh beat Mt. Pleasant twice 11-5 and 3-0 and Santa Teresa outlasted Branham 7-5.
Like the girls, the boys will play a triple trouble round in baseball action in the Mt. Hamilton Division this season.
