Their Willow Glen coaches knew all along that Steven Skavdahl and Jose Cervantez were special players. Now the entire Blossom Valley Athletic League and everyone else knows it, too.
Skavdahl and Cervantez were among the special honors winners when the BVAL announced its winter all-league teams.
Skavdahl was selected as the Sophomore of the Year on the all-BVAL Santa Teresa Division boys basketball team, and Cervantez was picked the Sophomore of the Year in Santa Teresa Division boys soccer.
Skavdahl topped a list of local players honored on the all-Santa Teresa hoop squad. His Willow Glen teammates Will Robinson, a senior, and Hienock Habte, a junior, were also named to the first team along with senior Kevin Hayes of Prospect and junior David Farsai of Leland. Prospect's Nat Naeltaye was named the division's Freshman of the Year and Leland senior Danny Hamouie was picked to the second team.
Willow Glen's Cervantez, meanwhile, won Soph of the Year plaudits in Santa Teresa Division boys soccer. Senior Carlos Zarate and junior Tom Jason were Rams selected to the all-league first team and juniors Noe Guzman and Valencia Uriel were picked to the second team.
Sophomore Francisco Heredia and freshman Brian Rezowalli were Lincoln players named to the first team and sophomore Ricky Dorrego and junior Marcos Medina were Lions on the second team.
In girls basketball, Willow Glen senior Diana Schnabel was an all-league first team pick in the Santa Teresa Division with junior Emily Roberts nailing a berth on the second team.
Senior defender Dio Ayala and junior midfielder Maria Sosa were Willow Glen players selected to the all-league girls soccer team in the Santa Teresa Division. Ayala won a place on the first team and Sosa was named to the second team.
Lincoln's Nancy Fernandez was selected as the division's Junior of the Year. Freshman Jessica Gore of the Lions was named to the first team with senior Marisol Agustinez and junior Vanessa Tellez winning second team honors.
Co-champion Del Mar placed three players on the first team--sophomore Marisol Padilla, senior San Juana Padilla and junior Dzenana Becirbasic--and two more on the second team--sophomores Ashlynn Polinni and Sarah Buxton.
Talented senior center Jackie George was named the Most Valuable Player after leading the Chargers to the championship in the BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division girls basketball race.
Teammate Kristen Yoshioka was picked the Sophomore of the Year in the division with junior Mika Yanai and soph Meggie Yoshioka earning all-league second team honors.
Del Mar was represented by senior Gladia Castro on the first team and sophomore Kellene Condie on the second team.
Lincoln's Joe Mentillo was tabbed the Coach of the Year in the West Valley Division boys basketball circuit. Senior forward Gabriel Ortiz won a place on the all-league first team for the Lions with seniors James Perez and Matt Galindo claiming second team spots.
Del Mar seniors Randy Barnes and Johnny Daniels were picked to the first team and senior Bobby Danz of the Dons was a second team selection.
In girls basketball in the West Valley Division, Lincoln's sophomore center Alex Scoffone and junior forward Nancy Adjei were picked to the first team and junior guard Nicole Smith was named to the second team.
