Nguyen finished first in Kumite (sparring) in the 1314 age group for boys to lead the local effort in the competition that featured a field of 725 competitors representing 25 states and seven foreign countries.

Huy Ngugen was second in Kumite in the same age division and also added a second in Kata (forms).

Joshua Howell was second in Kumite and third in Kata in the 1012 age group for boys, and Joanne Pham was second in Kata in the 1314 girls division.

"I'm very proud of the kids," said Sensei Richard Barefield, chief instructor at the San Jose Japan Karate-do Center, in a press release. "The Ozawa Cup is a very tough tournament with world class competitors."

Earlier this year, the San Jose Japan Karate-do Center came through with a solid effort at the 32nd annual Japan Karate-do Organization International Championships in San Diego, winning two division championships and placing in six other divisions.

"They all performed amazingly, displaying power, precision and grace in their movements without forgetting what karate is all about--respect," said Barefield of his athletes. "They all performed like champions, and we should be proud of them."

D. Nguyen finished first in Kumite and second in Kata, Pham was a Kata winner and H. Nguyen was third in Kata. The three, competing in the beginner class, also finished third as a team in Kata.

Howell finished second in Kata in intermediate competition and Breanna Ledesma was second in Kata competing as a beginner.
