Marcos Corona has two years left in his high school track and field career. But the Willow Glen sophomore isn't waiting for the future to make his mark in Central Coast Section circles--he's ready right now.

Corona ran well enough at the CCS semifinals held May 21 at San José City College to earn two spots in the section finals coming up May 27. The meet was to be held at San José City College, but because of a scheduling conflict will move to Los Gatos High School. Field events begin at 4 p.m. with running events to get under way at 6 p.m.

Corona raced to a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter run in 4:19.72, finishing just over two seconds off the winning pace set by Menlo Atherton senior Evan Anderson, who won the event in 4:17.26. Corona was more than three seconds ahead of Burlingame junior Monte Keleher, fourth in 4:22.99.

But Corona wasn't content to just advance to the CCS finals in one event. He came back later in the meet to nail fifth place in the 3,200 meters, running 9:42.77. He finished hot on the heels of North Monterey County senior Nathan Huerta, fourth in 9:42.72. Ben Sitler, a junior from St. Francis, won the event in 9:27.39 with Anderson second in 9:33.83.

Willow Glen's Mohamed Abdalla finished his freshman season with a solid showing in the 3,200, but didn't finish high enough to qualify for the finals. Abdalla was 20th in 10:07.50, finishing an impressive 15 seconds ahead of any other freshman in the field.

Senior Michael Morales failed to qualify for the CCS finals, but he didn't finish his track career with a couple of solid efforts at the semifinals. Morales was 11th in the 200 meters in 22.60 and he ran 19th in the 100 in 11.30.

Junior Angela Pizzella, who led the Willow Glen girls by qualifying in three events for the CCS semi's, finished her season strong by placing 14th in the triple jump with a leap of 34-0.
