Lightning never strikes twice in the same place. Right ... try to convince the Willow Glen A's of that.
The Willow Glen Little League minor A division squad turned a very rare triple-play earlier this year in a game against the Mets. And now the A's have done it again, but this one was a little different.
"This one was even more extraordinary," said A's manager Michael Lehman. "It was unassisted."
"I thought I'd seen it all," added Lehman, "but this one was truly amazing."
Andrew Sims turned the trick in a game against the Reds. Runners were on second and third with no outs when the second baseman dove to his left to snag a line drive for the first out. With the runners moving on the crack of the bat, Sims trotted over to second to tag the bag for the second out, then raced to third to beat the runner back for the third and final out.
An inning later, Sims made a similar catch, again diving to his left to grab a line drive. This time, though, there was no triple-play. But then, how many triple-plays can a team turn in a season? The way the A's are going, who knows?
