Carry a water bottle
as a good dog owner
In response to A.G. Carrington's letter ("Dogs should roam where they can pee," May 25), an ordinance against walking our dogs in Willow Glen would be ridiculous.
I'd like to tell the reader who suggested that idea that one of the things I love most about living in Willow Glen is the sight of dogs happily walking to and from downtown Willow Glen with their owners in tow. If it wasn't for the dog walkers I wouldn't have met half of my neighbors.
It's a tradition around here, walking our dogs, meeting each other and socializing. I'd hate to think an ordinance would put an end to all that.
As for taking our dogs to a schoolyard to urinate, that's not a workable idea for a lot of reasons. Many of the dog owners are senior citizens who no longer drive and just want to walk their dogs a short distance. It gives them a reason to walk and to meet their neighbors. They can't walk a mile to find the nearest schoolyard so their dogs can urinate, and no dog is going to "hold it." In addition, how unsanitary would it be for the children if every dog owner descended on their school yard to let their dogs "P. Freely."
If it's true that dog urine ruins the lawn, then I suggest we dog owners carry a spray bottle of water. It could be used twofold: To give our dogs water on a hot day and to spray the grass with water after our dogs urinate.
I'm willing to do this if it helps keep the grass green and makes non-dog owners happy.
