The high school track and field season came to an end for most Santa Clara Valley athletes last Friday night at the Central Coast Section finals held at Los Gatos High School--but not for Marcos Corona of Willow Glen.
Corona raced to a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run to qualify for the CIF State Track and Field Championships to be held June 3-4 at Sacramento City College's Hughes Stadium. The top three placers in each event at CCS qualified for state.
The Willow Glen sophomore matched his personal best effort of the year when he ran 4:19.92 to finish just over three seconds behind senior Evan Anderson of Menlo Atherton (4:16.76). Corona came back to finish seventh in the 3,200 meters in a personal best 9:38.62.
"Marcos made another great competitive leap in his young career by being ready to perform when it most counted," said Willow Glen distance coach Victor Santamaria. "It's been his yearlong goal to qualify for the state championships after having an outstanding freshman season."
"Qualifying for the state meet is a major accomplishment for any athlete, most especially a sophomore," added Santamaria. "Marcos is still relatively new to the sport, having only competed for a year, but he has consistently demonstrated the talent and experience of a seasoned champion runner."
