'Girls a Go-Go' live up to Odyssey challenge
By Alicia Upano
St. Christopher School's five-member team, "Girls A Go-Go," placed third in an international competition designed to help kindergartners through college students "think outside the box."

Fifth-graders Isabella Colpo, Sophia Swain, Kimberley Kulusich, Liza Talavera and Maria Lesieutre competed in the Odyssey of the Mind World Championships May 21-24 in Boulder, Colo.

On April 9, the Willow Glen team won first place in the California tournament in Visalia, which earned the girls a berth in the international competition.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international education program designed to test creative problem-solving skills. In the competitions, the team can choose from five challenges. The girls chose to build "stunt mobiles" that went around obstacles, drove forward and back, and climbed steps.

Starting in November, Girls a Go-Go devoted their weekend hours to building two cars that had to run without the benefit of a power source.

The team coaches were parent volunteers, including Dan Lesieutre, Margarita Colpo, Teresa Lesieutre and Barbara Murrieta. At the competition, Girls-A-Go-Go competed alongside teams from China, Poland, Netherlands, Germany, Russia and Singapore.
