Lincoln Glen teams second, third at section
By Jessica Peters
The Lincoln Glen major division all-stars took the longest road through the Section 5 tournament last week after emerging victorious from the District 12 bracket the week before. Lincoln Glen took third place after a hard-fought run through the consolation bracket in the double-elimination competition in Hollister.

The District 12 champions fell in their first game of the tourney, suffering a 3-2 loss in a marathon eight-inning contest against District 44 victors Santa Clara Briarwood. The team rebounded on the July 22 in yet another extra-inning game, battling Scotts Valley for a 9-8 win in the seventh frame.

By the time the next day dawned, Lincoln Glen had proven itself tired of drawn out games and managed to dispatch Milpitas South 12-2 by the fifth, the game was called due to the 10-run rule.

Santa Clara Briarwood, meanwhile, had been blanked by host Hollister National, and met Lincoln Glen for the second time in the tournament in an elimination game for both squads. Lincoln Glen stumbled again against Briarwood, falling 9-3 and clinching its spot as the tourney's third-place team.

Briarwood went on to a rematch with Hollister in the championship game, and Hollister, which did not allow a run in the entire tournament, captured a tight 2-0 victory last Monday.

The Lincoln Glen senior division all-stars came even closer to the Section 5 trophy than their major division counterparts. The all-stars took second place in the sectional tournament in Sunnyvale, dropping a close championship game to Milpitas.

Like the majors team, the senior all-stars lost their first match-up, a 10-6 falter against eventual champ Milpitas. Lincoln Glen struggled to get on the board throughout the game, allowing Milpitas to build up a 7-0 lead by the fifth inning. The team pushed its way onto the scoreboard in that frame, though, and mustered up two runs, followed by a four-run, seventh-inning rally that just fell short. Charlie Findeisen provided half of the team's RBIs, plating himself and two baserunners on a final-frame home run.

Lincoln Glen kept zeroes on the board for Gilroy, the District 39 representative, in the team's next game, winning 10-0. Lincoln Glen's Scott Healy pitched five scoreless innings, with support from three multi-hit players--Matt Mazzoni, Xavier De La Rocha and Alex Bozzo. The game was over after five complete.

The team won its next two to advance to the championship contest against Milpitas, where the locals lost their second game of the tournament, 3-1.
