Weekend run at Great America is a Hurricane Katrina benefit

Participants in the 2005 "Run, Forrest, Run!" coming up Sept. 18 at Paramount's Great America will get more than just free admission to the local amusement park for the day--they'll also get the chance to support the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

The United Way Silicon Valley, co-sponsors of the 5K fun run/walk with Great America and the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., will donate all proceeds from the race to hurricane relief.

Race-day registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and the race gets under way at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $25 for adults and $17 for runners ages 17 and under. Participants will receive a T-shirt, lunch provided by the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and admission that day to Great America.

Sports medicine

Dr. Steve Petty of Kaiser Permanente's sports medicine department will be one of the main presenters at a seminar, "Current Trends in Sports Medicine," on Sept. 24 at Kaiser's Santa Teresa facility. The seminar is open to high school and youth coaches, athletic trainers, and also to physicians who can earn continuing education credit.

JA golf tourney

Former San Francisco 49er Guy McIntyre and Craig Waibel of the San Jose Earthquakes will be in the field at the 16th annual Junior Achievement Golf Classic on Sept. 19 at the Silver Creek Country Club. Registration begins at 9 a.m. that day with a shotgun start at noon. Lunch and dinner will be provided.

Flag football

The South Bay Football League is looking for players ages 6-14 to participate in its NFL Flag football program, a non-contact five-player passing game sponsored by the NFL.

The fee is $70 per player for the eight-game season and players will receive an NFL logo jersey and a flag belt. There will also be skill development sessions and championship awards will be presented.

Practices and games will be held on the same day, and games will be played Sundays from 1-5 p.m. at the Campbell Community Center (corner of Winchester Boulevard and Campbell Avenue) beginning Sept. 25 through early November.

Keeper needed

The Central Valley Fusion, a girls under 16 Class 3 comp soccer team, is looking for a goalkeeper (born after July 31, 1989) for the fall season. The 13th annual San Jose PAL Golf Classic will be held Sept. 26 at the Villages Golf and Country Club.
