Carona, Abdalla lead Rams to 4th at Stanford

Marcos Corona and Mohamed Abdalla each finished in the top 10 to lead the Willow Glen boys cross country to a Division 3 team third at the rugged Stanford Invitational last weekend.

Corona, a junior, finished fourth overall in 16:16 and Abdalla, a sophomore, ran ninth in 16:36 to star for the Rams in the meet.

Rounding out the top five for the Rams were junior Samson Galato, 42nd in 17:18; soph Eyuel Galato, 50th in 17:32; and senior Robert Ramos, 60th in 17:40.

There 208 runners and 30 teams in the Division 3 field, and the Rams finished third overall with 147 points behind Corona Del Mar (106) and St. Francis (127). Acalanes was a close fourth at 165.

In girls competition, Presentation finished 16th in a tough Division 2 field. Leading the Panthers was senior Katie Wallace, 66th in 21:03. Junior Lauren Ruiz was 82nd in 21:42 and senior Kathleen Dazzi was 84th in 21:44. Freshman Rebekah Phillips ran 89th in 21:49.

Girls volleyball

The Willow Glen girls volleyball team split a pair of matches last week, beating Silver Creek in four games before losing in four to Santa Teresa.

The Rams, 1-1 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and 7-7 overall, topped Silver Creek 19-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-23 to open the week. Senior Angela Pizella was the kill leader for the Rams with 15 in the win.

Pizella came back with 17 kills, but the Rams dropped a tough 25-14, 25-15, 21-25, 25-20 decision to the Saints last week.

Willow Glen will be back on the court this week. After visiting Evergreen Valley on Sept. 27, the Rams will face a bye on Thursday before hosting Andrew Hill on Oct. 4, 6:30 p.m.
