Hair salon supports
those with cancer

October is devoted to Breast Cancer Awareness, and one Willow Glen business is doing its part to bring attention to the disease.

Antoni Paez Hair Gallery, 1163 Lincoln Ave., is donating 5 percent of its proceeds from all services during the month of October to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research.

The salon is doing the same in its Rose Garden location.

The impetus behind the effort comes from Anthony and Jason Paez's mother's battle with breast cancer.

When Mary Ann Paez was diagnosed in May of 2004, Jason Paez says, "My brother talked to his clients and they were very supportive. We found that many of our clients had family or friends who were going through or had gone through the same thing."

In addition to donating money, Paez says they will have information on early detection and mammograms available.

"Because of early detection, our mother was able to beat the disease," he says. "As a salon, we want to raise awareness and money for the cause."

Committee looking to fill positions

The board of education is seeking individuals interested in serving on the San Jose Unified School District Citizens Bond Oversight Committee.

Applicants will complete the terms of committee members who have resigned, which expire on June 30. At that time, applicants will be able to apply for an additional two-year term.

The purpose of the committee is to inform the public concerning the expenditure of bond revenues from Measure F, which was passed in 2002. These dollars are being used for capital improvements on campuses throughout the district.

Currently, the committee meets four to eight times annually on Monday nights. Members of the committee must live within the San Jose Unified School District.

Applications must be completed and returned by Oct. 17. Interviews will be held on the morning of Oct. 25. For an application or more information, contact Lynn Raspone at 408.535.6733.

Willow Street Pizza aids relief efforts

Willow Street Pizza donated 10 percent of its Oct. 5 sales, or $555, to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina and other disasters.

The Oct. 5 event was part of a nationwide fundraising effort through Dine for America, sponsored by the National Restaurant Association.

The association recruited more than 16,000 restaurants in the country to donate part of their profits to the Red Cross.

Willow Street Pizza participated in a similar event after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The national effort raised more than $20 million from 8,000 restaurants.

Willow Street Pizza will also hold "giving back" days on Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. The Willow Glen restaurant is located at 1072 Willow St. For more information, visit www.willowstreet.com.
