Pizella stars, but Rams can only split

Angela Pizella had quite a day for the Willow Glen girls volleyball team. Check that--make it quite a week.

Pizella finished with 43 kills in two matches to lead the Rams to a split against Silver Creek and Lincoln.

Pizella had 15 kills in Willow Glen's come-from-behind win over Silver Creek. Willow Glen won 25-22, 18-25, 15-25, 25-12, 15-13. The Rams are now 12-11 overall and 5-2 in the division.

Earlier in the week, Willow Glen fell to Lincoln. Pizella had another great match with 28 kills, which was enough to lead both teams for the night. The Rams fell 20-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16 and 15-13. Alex VonRaesfeld was the kill leader for the Lions with 15.

The Rams were to travel to face Santa Teresa, 4-6 overall and 2-2 in league, on Oct. 19 and then they will host Evergreen on Oct. 21. The Cougars are 10-5 overall and so far boasting and undefeated 4-0 in league.

Polo team rolling

The Rams' water polo team is playing strong this season, already 5-0 in league play after defeating Silver Creek 14-6 on Oct. 12.

Willow Glen took an early lead, scoring six goals in the first quarter, then another three in the second. The Rams allowed only two goals in the first half. Creek outscored Willow Glen 3-2 in the third, but the Rams topped the Raiders 3-1 in the fourth to post the easy victory.

Scott London and Sam Brandt each scored three goals in the win, Sam Okun and Reese Rotsaert scored two apiece and Josh Dombro, Geoffrey Dubridge, Freddie Martinez and Nathan Woo each added a score.

Willow Glen is now 6-3 overall with an unblemished 5-0 league record. The Rams were to host Independence on Oct. 20 before traveling to Piedmont on Oct. 27.

Field hockey team falls

Willow Glen's field hockey team dropped a close one to Del Mar 1-0. The Rams are now 2-4-2 overall and were to host Berkeley on Oct. 18 before facing Presentation at home on Oct. 20.

Rams are struggling

Willow Glen's football team is struggling this season with a 1-5 season record and 0-3 mark in the Santa Teresa Division after its most recent loss, a 27-7 defeat at the hands of Westmont on Oct. 15. Westmont is 5-0-1 thus far this year with a 2-0-1 record in league.

Juan Baron scored the only touchdown for Willow Glen on a three-yard run in the fourth quarter with McCabe Tonna kicking the extra point.

Willow Glen will face Lick in a non-league game this week. They travel to the home of the Comets on Oct. 21 for a 7 p.m. game. Lick is 0-6 thus far this season.

Scholarships?

The Willow Glen athletic department will sponsor a free presentation on the student-athlete and college recruiting on Oct. 19 in the Little Theater at Willow Glen Middle School. No reservations are needed.

"The presentation will teach student-athletes and parents the truth about athletic scholarships and show them what it takes mentally, physically and academically to compete in college at any level," Willow Glen athletic director Peggy Booth said. "It will provide the materials and information for coaches, athletes and parents to help make knowledgeable decisions and choices regarding the recruiting process."

A presentation for coaches and guidance counselors at 5:30 p.m. will be followed by a presentation for student-athletes and parents at 7:20 p.m.
