Young writers are invited to cover a San Jose Sharks hockey game

The San Jose Sharks are inviting young newspaper reporters to their game against Dallas Stars on Nov. 12 for a special High School Sports Writers Day at HP Pavilion.

Those high school sports reporters working on their school newspapers will get the opportunity to cover a National Hockey League game and experience the life of a professional sports reporter. The event begins at 6 p.m. and runs beyond the conclusion of the game.

Sports writers will receive postgame access to a Sharks player, pregame access to a member of the hockey staff, a meal in the press room, a visit with a local sports writer, a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility and the opportunity to watch the game with a press box view.

Participants are required to write a feature story of their experience to be published in their school newspaper, with a winning selection to be published on sjsharks.com and in Rink Report. The winning writer will also receive a Sharks prize package, including two tickets to a future game.

Interested writers must submit a 250-word essay on one of two topics: "What the experience would mean to you," or "What is the significance of the Sharks to the city of San Jose?" Submissions are due by Oct. 28 and should be sent to Jeff Cafuir at jcafuir@svse.net. Only 12 applicants will be accepted.
