Rams make a run for division volleyball title
By Dick Sparrer
"Go, Silver Creek!"

That's the battle cry on the volleyball court at Willow Glen High School this week.

Not that the Rams have any great love for the Raiders. But the Willow Glen girls would love to see Silver Creek knock off Evergreen Valley on Thursday night.

Because if the Rams can wrap up play this week with a couple of victories, and if the Raiders can upset the Cougars on Thursday, Willow Glen would have sole ownership of the championship in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Of course, Willow Glen would be content to just win its final two matches of the regular season and share the title with Evergreen. That would be the scenario should the Rams and Cougars each win out in this, the final week of the regular season.

The Rams were to host Oak Grove on Nov. 1 while Evergreen visited Lincoln, and the teams will wrap up Santa Teresa play on Nov. 3--Willow Glen at Lincoln and Evergreen at home against Silver Creek in a couple of 5 p.m. matches.

Willow Glen entered play last week in a first-place tie with Evergreen. The Cougars won twice, but so did the Rams, each team improving to 8-2 heading into the final week of play. Willow Glen, 19-13 overall, is led by a talented corps of senior players.

Angela Pizella, Emily Roberts, Corina Lopez, Stephanie Wilson and Katie Joyce have been key players in Willow Glen's rise to the top of the division standings.

"I've been coaching the seniors for three years," said third-year Willow Glen coach Carlee Howie. "They have improved tremendously, and now they're contending for league title."

"I'm proud of all the players--this has been a very successful season," the coach added.

Willow Glen pushed its record to 8-2 last week with a 25-7, 25-15, 22-25, 25-12 win over Andrew Hill. Pizella led the club in kills with 16 and in blocks with 10. Roberts supported with 11 kills, Joyce topped the team with nine service points and Wilson was the assist leader with 29.

Pizella hit her season average with the 16 kills. She now has 235 for the season. Roberts has 122 kills, an eight-kill a match average.

Pizella's 93 blocks leads the team and Wilson is averaging 27 assists per match. Roberts has a team-high 37 service aces and Lopez a team-high 74 service points.

"Katie Joyce is instrumental on serve receive and defense," said the coach of her other senior standout. "She is our go-to for passing and does a phenomenal job."

The Rams moved into a position to contend for the title when they defeated Santa Teresa in three games and Evergreen in four during the week of Oct. 27.

"The girls were on top of their game, and succeeded in making us contenders," said Howie.

"Unlike the other teams in our league, our team controls the game from the middle," she added. "Pizella and Roberts are outstanding hitters and blockers--and they are also central to our serve receive and defense. They play the court--they are aggressive and they never give up. It's rare that you have such amazing offensive players who are a defensive threat as well. They hit everywhere."

Still, someone has to get the volleyball to the girls in the middle.

"Our setter, Stephanie Wilson, gets to every ball and creates options for offense," said Howie. "She is very driven--she focuses and pushes our team to do their very best. She is very aware of the court and the other team and capitalizes on our strengths and their weaknesses."

The other two seniors, Joyce and Lopez, also play key roles as outside hitters.

"They can hit and they play smart--they can move the ball around," said Howie. "Joyce creates a lot of energy on the court and picks up balls no one else does--she plays amazing defense and receives the serve very well.

"Lopez is the most consistent player on the court--she is extremely athletic and plays with her head. She sees the court--she leads with service points, and rarely makes a mistake."

Junior Lauren Scanlan and sophomore Leah Mee are other key players for the Rams.

"This is their first year on varsity, but they have done an amazing job," the coach said. "Both set a big block and have taken away the other team's outside offense."

Juniors Andrea Nankivell and Kelly Keiley and sophomores Samantha Carter and Danae Rodriguez are other key players for Willow Glen.
