Lawn Bowling is
also at Bramhall
We were happy to hear that Bramhall Park was voted the best park in Willow Glen. The Best of Willow Glen issue, Nov. 2, very carefully listed the amenities it provides, actually in two different articles. What disappointed us was that a very important area of the park at the corner of Britton Avenue and Camino Ramon was overlooked--the Lawn Bowling Green.
It has been there since 1968 and is utilized by some of our members every day of the week except those days that are reserved for maintenance.
Thanks to the city of San Jose Parks and Recreation and Louie and Pedro, who are part of their staff, our green has one of the best lawn bowling surfaces in the Bay Area.
The San Jose Lawn Bowls Club boasts a membership of 70, which includes several U.S. champions. There are 13 clubs in Northern California stretching from Carmel to Santa Rosa and Vacaville. Those players who are willing to travel can compete in a tournament in the area almost every weekend during the summer. Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, Lake Merritt Park in Oakland and Rossmoor in Walnut Creek host the larger tournaments, as they each have three greens.
Lawn bowling is included in the annual Huntsman Senior World Games in St. George, Utah, and some consideration has been given to including it in the Summer Olympics.
The sport has recently been introduced into mainland China and is attracting young players. A major tournament will be held in Szhenzhen in 2006. The Americans and Canadians have been invited to send in their entries.
Visitors are welcome to our green on Saturday mornings at 9:45 a.m. for instruction. The only requirement is that a person wear flat shoes with no heel. We provide the bowls for training. For more information visit our website at www.sjlbc.org.

Corrections
The story in the Nov. 9 issue "Korean War veteran establishes memorial to his fallen comrades" listed the wrong phone number. The contact number is 408.855.9935.
The story in the Nov. 9 issue, "Curtner Avenue next on the list for flashing beacons on crosswalk," should have said the flashing beacons will be installed at the crosswalk on the corner of Curtner, Richland and Newport avenues by late June.
