Willow Glen High School Thursdays and Fridays at the Theater is about to get loud.
The principal percussionist with Symphony Silicon Valley and Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley, Galen Lemmon, will lead 15 percussionists from the San Jose Youth Symphony in a Nov. 17 performance that will include a Bach fugue and a special arrangement of "Danny Boy."
"People will be pretty amazed by the percussion concert," Lemmon says. "It's a visual performance."
Most people don't realize that percussion instruments have a wide, dynamic range, he says.
"Many people haven't usually heard percussion concerts," Lemmon says. "Drums are usually background, but not here."
The audience will be treated to sounds produced by a variety of instruments including marimba, vibes, xylophone and, of course, drums.
Lemmon is excited about sharing his passion with the community.
"The public can come to see what percussion is really capable of," he says. "There will be something for all ages to enjoy."
The Percussion Extravaganza will be held Nov. 17 at the Willow Glen Little Theater, 2105 Cottle Ave., from 7 to 8 p.m.
Tickets cost $7 for adults, $6 for students and seniors, and $25 for families. Proceeds benefit the Willow Glen Middle and High School music programs.
