Sacred Heart needs
500 volunteers
Sacred Heart's annual ToyBox will open to more than 1,800 preregistered families and will provide toys, books and stuffed animals for more than 5,000 children. But the nonprofit agency needs more than 500 volunteers to prepare for this all-day event.
The ToyBox will be open on Dec. 19 from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Almost 15,000 toys will be distributed. In addition to toy donations, warm clothing, blankets, diapers, formula and nonperishable foods are needed.
Donations can be dropped off at 1381 S. First Street at Alma Road Monday through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For more information on how to volunteer, call 408.278.2171 or email volunteers@sacredheartcommunityservice.org.
North Willow Glen
resident attacked
Several individuals attacked a 27-year-old San Jose resident who was walking near the intersection of Delmas and W. Virginia avenues on Dec. 2 at 11:45 p.m.
Neighbors heard screaming and what they thought was a gunshot, San Jose police spokeswoman Gina Tepoorten said. When the neighbors opened the door, they saw three or four young males beating a man. The neighbors called 911.
The police arrived at the scene and then located the man a block away at his home. He was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center where he received treatment for head injuries and cuts on his arms and hands.
Police determined the "gunshot" was the sound of a bottle breaking, possibly over the man's head.
The man did not provide the police with any information about the individuals involved. Neighbors reported seeing one to three cars leaving the scene, including a white SUV.
"We don't know if it's random, gang-related or if he knew the suspects," Tepoorten said.
Association prints
business directory
The Willow Glen Business and Professional Association is compiling its first business directory since 2000. The directory will be distributed to more than 20,000 Willow Glen households in the beginning of 2006.
The directory will include names and contact information for business located on Lincoln Avenue between Minnesota and Coe avenues, and businesses on Minnesota and Brace avenues and Willow Street.
There is no cost for a business to be listed in the directory.
The business association is looking for businesses to submit their information and advertise in the directory. Willow Glen-based etc...group Creative Services is designing the directory.

Sculpture classes
showcase work
The Willow Glen High School visual arts department will hold a silent auction to benefit the advanced sculpture classes on Dec. 15. The project is a collaboration among advanced sculpture, AP and special projects classes at the high school. The event, Magic, Mystery & Mysticism, embodies one of the classes' themes, which was to sculpt masks.
"We did something similar to this about three years ago but only had about 10 pieces to show," said sculpture teacher and visual and performing arts chair Jef Wind.
The students will run the whole event this year, and 30 to 32 pieces will be on display.
"Some of the sculptures have really incredible solutions to the themes," Wind said. "They vary widely and are all based on the human face. The kids did a great job."
The silent auction will be held at the high school's painting studio, room X13, 2001 Cottle Ave., from 6-7 p.m. and the reception will run until 8 p.m. There will also be refreshments and finger foods.
