Willow Glen girls off to a hot start
By Kevin Sparrer
If you can assume anything about a team's season by the first few games, then the Willow Glen girls varsity basketball team should have a great year.

The Lady Rams won two games last week, beating Andrew Hill 50-41 and Oak Grove 58-50 at home, to run their season record to 6-1.

The Rams have three returning seniors this year. Emily Roberts is a 5-foot-9 returning post player who was a second team all-leaguer last year. Corina Lopez and Krista Pronge are both 5-foot-5 returning guards.

Angie Patton is a senior expected to help out the team this year. Also expected to help the varsity is junior Samantha Tsujiki.

"With the help of some transfer students and some seasoned sophomores, we should be competitive this year," said Willow Glen head coach Amy Gannon.

The Rams' game against Oak Grove was a proving ground for some of the team members.

Roberts showed her worth, scoring 16 points, six of which were from the free-throw line. Tsukiji also did her part, scoring nine points with one shot from behind the three-point arc. Lopez also scored nine points with three free throws.

Angie Patton, a senior, scored eight points, junior Stephanie Serna scored six, two from the free-throw line, Edith Vazquez scored five, with one shot from outside the paint, Brittany O'Brien scored three with one free-throw and Hayley Sharp scored two points.

Willow Glen's earlier game against Andrew Hill was another successful show of the Rams' skills. The Rams were trailing in the first half, but their defense held together in the third quarter where they outscored the Falcons 17-5.

Roberts was again the point leader in the game, scoring 15 with three at the line. Lopez also scored 15 points with three at the line as well. Patton put up 10 points while Vazquez had four and Tsukiji had six, two from the line.

The Rams will open play in the Cupertino Tournament on Dec. 14.

Willow Glen's league season starts on Jan. 5 when the Rams takes on the Del Mar Dons. The Rams are looking for a decent finish this year after having a season to get used to the competition in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, having won a title in the West Valley Division in 2004.

Wildcat Shootout

It wasn't an easy journey, but senior Andrew Lerma said follow me and then led the Pioneer boys basketball team down the road to the 2005 championship of the Los Gatos Lions Club Wildcat Shootout last week.

Lerma rattled the rim for 27 points in the Mustangs' 66-48 spanking of Live Oak in the championship game and was a constant presence on both the offensive and defensive boards, pulling down 14 rebounds. Lerma was in double digits in all three games of the tourney, totaling 55 points, and was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament for his efforts.

While Lerma was working his magic in the paint, Kyle Fager (nine points) and Nolan Maggipinto (six points) made sure that the outside threat was alive and well by combining for five three-pointers at strategic points in the game. Fager was also an all-tournament team selection.

Pioneer scratched out a 66-64 semifinal win over Leigh to make it to the finals. Leigh was led by all tournament selections Chris Weber and Blake McFarland.

The Longhorns came back from their semifinal loss to edge Branham 48-42 to take home the third-place trophy.

Saratoga played Willow Glen for the consolation championship Glen. The two teams had met the week before in the semifinals of the consolation bracket of the Westmont Tournament where Saratoga put a 63-38 shellacking on the Rams and Willow Glen was looking for payback. This time around the Rams got some outstanding play from Kyle Schroeder who burned the nets for 22 points, including three buckets from beyond the arc, and led the Rams to a thrilling 52-50 win to take home the fifth-place trophy.

The Falcons held on to a slim 27-25 lead at intermission before Willow Glen exploded for 18 in the third quarter while the Falcons could only find the bottom of the net for six and were looking at a 43-33 deficit. It was role reversal in the fourth when the Falcons got hot and poured in 17 points. The Rams were able to muster nine of their own to hold on for the win.

Schroeder got support from Hienock Habte who popped in 10 points and Steven Skavdahl fired in nine. Billy Hahn chipped in six and Lawrence Montepio added five.

The Rams got off to a tough start in the tourney by dropping an opening round game to Branham by the slim margin of 43-40. After building a 31-26 lead by the end of the third quarter, the Rams hit a cold spell in the final quarter which Branham took advantage of to pull out the win.

Habte was at the top of the scoring chart with 16 points, including a pair of threes. Skavdahl put in seven points and Schroeder added seven with both nailing a three-pointer.

Willow Glen came back strong in the second round of the consolation bracket to nail down an impressive 55-45 win over Los Gatos. The Rams outscored the Wildcats in three of the four quarters to nail down the win.

Schroeder was on fire and sizzled the nets for 24 points, including nine from the free-throw line. He had an excellent tournament and was named to the all-tournament team. Skavdahl was also in double figures with 13 with six from the free-throw line. The Rams were deadly from the charity line, dropping in 23 points from there during the contest. Montepio contributed seven points. Brian Chunn chipped in six and Habte added five.
