Souza is Mt. Hamilton Division MVP

The 2005 football season has come to an end, but it would seem that Pioneer is still boasting titles.

The Mustangs of Pioneer finished the season as co-champions in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and landed 13 players on the all-league team. In fact, three players won special awards for their play this season.

Senior Shaun Souza was Pioneer's No. 1 runner in the '05 campaign and earned the title of Outstanding Senior of the Year. Souza rushed for 1,079 yards on 142 carries and scored 15 touchdowns for the Mustangs. He also caught 26 passes for 411 yards.

Junior J.J. Goulden's performance this year earned him the Most Outstanding Special Team Player award. Goulden was the No. 1 receiver for the Mustangs, catching 22 passes for 458 yards, and he scored six touchdowns throughout the year.

Nick D'Antonio, another Pioneer senior, won the title of Outstanding Utility Player in the league. D'Antonio scored 12 touchdowns for Pioneer and ran for 630 yards. D'Antonio also caught 13 passes for 290 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Seniors C.J. Miller, Eddie Hsieh and Jon Silva each took their place on the first team all-league defensive team as linemen. Miller finished the season with 89 tackles, Silva had 55 and Hsieh had 28 and a fumble recovery.

Junior Chris Foley took first team offensive honors as a quarterback and junior Eric Sanchez earned a place on the first team in the offensive line. Foley threw for 1,186 yards and 16 touchdowns during the season.

Pioneer had five players make the second team. Senior Jerry Barnes and junior Steven Lopes were second team defensive backs and senior Dan Alvord was a second team defensive lineman. Alvord had 58 tackles this season as well as three fumble recoveries.

Junior Chris Broormeyer was second team offense as a lineman and senior Ken Dorset was second team as a tight end.

Though Leland struggled a little bit this season, the Chargers were not without their champions.

Lance Gemette was the Chargers' No. 1 runner, scoring six touchdowns and rushing for 557 yards on 122 carries. Gemette's performance this year was good enough to earn him the Outstanding Junior of the Year award.

Along with Gemette, senior Melis Barota who was awarded a first team position as a defensive lineman. Barota had 71 tackles for the Chargers this season.

Junior Daniel Schroeder won a first team spot for Leland in the offensive line.

Junior Adam Ondi was a second team pick as a running back. Ondi scored four touchdowns for the Chargers and rushed for 458 yards this season. He also caught nine passes for 46 yards and another touchdown.

Rams win honors

It was a long season for the Willow Glen football team in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL. The Rams were just 3-7 for the year and finished 1-5 in division play. Still, Willow Glen claimed plenty of honors in the postseason.

Junior running back Marcos Garces claimed a spot on the all-league first team offense.

Garces was a 1,000-yard rusher for the Rams this year. The talented senior led his squad with 1,052 yards on 169 carries and he also topped the team with 22 receptions for 320 yards. He ran for eight touchdowns and caught passes for three more.

Three Willow Glen seniors were named to the all-league first team defense. Linebacker Eric Zetterquist, lineman Gerardo Cisneros and kicker McCabe Tonna were tabbed to the defensive dream team.

Zetterquist was the defensive leader for the Rams with 94 tackles and Cisneros finished with 72. Zetterquist also had a pass interception and two quarterback sacks, and Cisneros got in on five sacks.

Tonna was a scoring threat as a kicker. He booted a couple of field goals and finished with eight extra points. He also finished with a 34.8-yard punting average and a booming 55.5-yard average on kickoffs.

Winning all-league second team honors for the Rams were junior offensive lineman Michael Roseland and senior defensive back Cole Slinker. Slinker finished with 24 tackles for the Rams.

Lincoln and Westmont finished as co-champions in the Santa Teresa Division and dominated the list of special awards.

Lincoln senior Jose Ramirez was picked as the Most Valuable Player and teammate Chris Mendoza was the Junior of the Year.

Westmont senior Chantz Staden was the division's Most Valuable Offensive Player and senior Stefan Fowler was the Most Valuable Defensive Player. Quarterback Kevin Pham of Westmont was named the Senior of the Year.
