A basketball game is often won or lost inside the paint. But it wasn't for lack of points from the post players that the Willow Glen girls fell to Branham 46-41 on Jan. 7.
The three Willow Glen post players scored more than half of their team's points, but the Rams still came up five short. Stephanie Serna was the leader with 10 points, with two at the line. Angie Patton also scored nine underneath with five at the line and Emily Roberts scored five with three free throws.
This loss brings Willow Glen to 1-1 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and 9-5 overall.
Other players to score in the game were Samantha Tsukiji, who had five points, three from outside the paint; Corina Lopez, who had three with a free throw; Edith Vazquez with four; and Hayley Tharp with five, three of them from the line.
The first league game for Willow Glen pitted the Rams against the Dons of Del Mar, and they won 40-36 on Jan. 5. Willow Glen took an early lead, outscoring the Dons in 6-4 in the first quarter and then 14-13 in the second.
Leading 20-17 at the half, the Rams did their best work in the third quarter, scoring 11 points to the Dons' 7. Del Mar was able to outscore the Rams in the fourth, but it was too little too late.
This time, the effort of the post players paid off in the victory with Patton scoring 14 points, with four at the line, but the big addition was Tsukiji with 11 points. She hit only two field goals and had seven points at the charity line. Roberts added two points and Tharp had three points on the only three-pointer in the game. Lopez had six with two at the line and Brittany O'Brien had four with two free throws.
Kellene Condie poured in 17 points for Del Mar to lead all scorers in the game.
The Rams were to travel to Silver Creek on Jan. 10 and will host Mt. Pleasant on Jan. 12.
WG boys are 2-0
The Willow Glen boys basketball team is also out to a good start this year, 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the Santa Teresa Division after defeating Prospect 54-47 on Jan. 6.
Steven Skavdahl and Hienock Habte led the team from outside the paint. Both players hit three three-pointers in the win. Skavdahl finished with 17 points and Habte had 16 with one at the line. Kyle Schroeder also made his contribution with 12 points, while Brian Chunn scored four, Billy Hahn hit a shot from outside the paint and Lawrence Montepio had two points.
The Rams opened league play with a 61-50 win over Andrew Hill. Skavdahl and Habte were at it again, but this time it was Habte leading the way.
Habte scored 18 points with three three-pointers and three points at the line, while Skavdahl had 17 with two from outside the arc and two at the line. Schroeder was also hitting his shots with 16 points, including six free throws. Montepio had four points, all at the free-throw line and Chunn had five with three at the line.
Willow Glen was to host Silver Creek on Jan. 10 and will travel to Overfelt on Jan. 13.
Girls 4-0 in soccer
Willow Glen's boys varsity soccer team dropped a tough one to Lincoln 4-1, but the girls pulled were able to pull one out against James Lick 1-0, making them 4-0 in West Valley Division play and 8-2-1 overall.
Danielle Yaconelli scored the only goal of the game with as assist from Kristen Edmunds in the win over the Comets.
Prior to defeating James Lick, the Rams bested San Jose Academy 7-0, scoring six goals in the first half.
Taylor Lundquist scored twice, Chelsea Sikk scored once with an assist from Evelyn Cervantes, Yaconelli had a goal with Burree Cowherd assisting, Janet Maria Guzman had two goals with Rebekah Cremer assisting on one and Cremer had a goal of her own.
Michel pins
Horacio Michel pinned at 130 pounds and Francisco Vargas nailed a 6-4 decision win at 160, but the Willow Glen wrestling team lost a tough 30-21 decision to Lincoln last week.
