Coffee shop helps Little League raise funds to buy new tractor
By Alicia Upano
Elva's Coffee Stop will have a raffle on Feb. 25 to raise funds for the Cambrian Little League, whose tractor was stolen in November and was never found.

Frank Acevedo, husband of owner Elva, is donating two Southwest Airlines tickets to the raffle, which he received for perfect attendance as a Southwest employee. Safeway will also donate four $25 gift certificates to the event. Acevedo is looking for other businesses to contribute gift certificates and gift cards toward the raffle, hoping to raise the money needed to replace the $4,000 tractor.

For the Acevedos, the fundraiser is personal. Their son, Matthew, is one of 450 children in the Cambrian Little League, and league president Michael Cunniff is a regular Elva's customer.

During last year's Thanksgiving holiday, at least two people made a 6-by-6-foot hole in a concrete fence near a locked shed at George Steindorf Jr. School field. The burglars tampered with the shed's lock and cut the door's cast iron handle. The tractor was wheeled out and most likely loaded into a waiting trailer, Cunniff said.

The loss of the tractor is a huge blow, because the league uses the tractor to mow its four fields and smooth out the dirt, or "drag the field," in the middle of games. The tractor was used up to three times weekly for the past seven years.

Cunniff reported the incident to the San Jose Police Department, but there have been no arrests or leads in the case. Replacing the tractor will be a large expense for the league, which relies on funding from snack shack proceeds, corporate sponsorships and other fundraising.

The league, which serves children in the Campbell, Cambrian and Willow Glen communities, is run entirely by volunteers. There are junior and senior leagues for ages 13 to 16 at the Ida Price Middle School field. The league's T-ball, minor and major divisions, ages 5 to 12, play at Steindorf.

To purchase raffle tickets for $5 or to donate items to the raffle, contact Elva's Coffee Stop, 2206 Lincoln Ave., or call 408.269.2245.
