Steven Skavdahl's range has made the Willow Glen Rams boys basketball team hard to beat this winter.
Skavdahl scored 24 points against Andrew Hill in the Rams' 58-49 win on Jan. 27. Skavdahl got hot from outside the arc, hitting six three-pointers. He also had four points at the free-throw line. Thanks to Skavdahl's hot streak, Willow Glen was able to win its seventh game of the season, bringing them to 7-1 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Kyle Schroeder was also a big contributor for the Rams. Schroeder put up 14 points, including six from the line.
Hienock Habte added 10 points, while Lawrence Montepio and Brian Chunn both had four--each with a three-pointer and a free throw.
Billy Hahn had two points.
Willow Glen also downed an attempt by Leland to knock the Rams out of first place on Jan. 24. The Rams defeated the Chargers 67-61 with Habte leading the offense. Habte had 24 points in the win with two threes. Along with Habte was Schroeder with 19. Schroeder had a three-pointer and two from the line.
Skavdahl came next with 11 points with one three. Montepio scored nine in the win with three free throws and Chunn had one from the line.
The Rams will face Silver Creek away on Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in their next game.
Rams fall to Bruins
The Willow Glen girls suffered a loss to Branham 53-42 on Jan. 26. Emily Roberts led the offense with 11 points. Three of Roberts' points came from the line.
Behind Roberts was Hayley Tharp who had nine. Tharp had the only three-pointer in the game. Angie Patton put up eight, Krista Pronge had six, Stephanie Serna had four and both Corina Lopez and Samantha Tsukiji had two free throws.
Two days earlier, Willow Glen topped Independence 52-44 with Patton leading the charge. Patton scored 16 points for the Rams with six of those points coming from the free-throw line. Serna added nine points with three at the line, Roberts had eight, Tsukiji had three, all from the line, and Pronge, Brittany O'Brien and Edith Vasquez each added two.
Willow Glen was to face Del Mar at home on Jan. 31 and they will host Silver Creek on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
Boys tie, girls win
The Willow Glen boys soccer team has been playing well so far this season with a 4-1-4 record in the Santa Teresa Division after its tie with James Lick on Jan. 27. Noe Guzman scored the only goal for Willow Glen in the tie. The Rams are 9-3-6 overall.
The Rams will travel to Lincoln on Feb. 1. The game starts at 3:15 p.m. at the home of the Lions.
The Willow Glen girls crushed San Jose Academy 6-0 on Jan. 26. Taylor Lunquist scored an unassisted goal for the Rams. Burree Cowherd knocked one in with Evelyn Cervantes on the assist. Mayra Diaz scored one with Kristen Edmunds assisting, Chelsea Sikk pounded in a goal with Lunquist's assist, Danielle Yaconelli scored one with Janet-Maria Guzman assisting and Kathryn Cremer finished out the scoring with an unassisted goal.
Willow Glen fought a hard battle against Silver Creek on Jan. 24 that ended in a 1-1 tie. Yaconelli knocked in the only goal of the day for Willow Glen with Cremer on the assist.
The Rams travel to Lick on Feb.1.
