Steven Skavdahl and Hienock Habte gave Silver Creek a lesson in how to shoot a basketball last week.
Skavdahl and Habte combined for 40 points in Willow Glen's 59-42 win over the Raiders in boys basketball action on Feb. 3. Habte was all over the court nailing his shots. He hit 10 buckets, including a three-pointer, for a total of 21 points. Skavdahl did half of his damage from outside the arc, burying three three-pointers. He also had two from the line and totaled 19 points in the game.
Lawrence Montepio also added his skills with seven points, including a three. Brian Chunn finished with five, Billy Hahn had four and Kyle Schroeder had three.
The win over Silver Creek brought Willow Glen to 8-2 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and to 15-6 overall.
The Rams suffered their second loss of the season on Jan. 31 to Prospect 53-38.
Skavdahl led the effort this time with 16 points, with a free throw and the only Ram three-pointer. Habte backed him with eight points, including two at the line. Schroeder added six points, Montepio had four, and Hahn and Chunn both had two.
The Rams were to travel to Overfelt on Feb. 7 before hosting Gunderson on Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
Willow Glen is now tied with Prospect for second place in the Santa Teresa Division behind Evergreen Valley (9-1). All three teams have four games left in the season to decide who will finish with the title.
The female Rams used teamwork to defeat Silver Creek 47-40 in on Feb. 2. Nine of the 11 players on the Willow Glen roster scored at least one point in the win. Willow Glen has brought its record to 5-5 in the Santa Teresa Division and to 13-9 overall.
Hayley Tharp led the offensive effort with 13 points for the Rams. Nine of those points came from outside the arc. Samantha Tsukiji added her skills with 10, including two three-pointers. Krista Pronge finished with six points, Brittany O'Brien had five with a three. Angie Patton also had five, Corina Lopez had three, Emily Roberts and Stephanie Serna both had two and Michelle Galvis had one.
On Jan. 31 the Rams downed the Del Mar 41-30 with Roberts leading the charge. Roberts put up 11 with five at the line while Serna had nine points. Patten had six points, O'Brien had five points, which were all at the free-throw line, and Pronge had four. Tsukiji, Tharp and Lopez each had two.
Willow Glen was to face Mt. Pleasant on Feb. 7 before hosting Gunderson on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. Gunderson is currently leading the league with a record of 10-0.
Willow Glen's girls soccer team continues its undefeated season with a big 6-0 win over Yerba Buena on Feb. 3. With the win, the Rams are 9-0-2 in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and 13-2-3 overall.
Mayra Diaz began the scoring for the Rams with an assist from Burree Cowherd. Kathryn Cremer scored two unassisted goals and Cowherd added one of her own with an assist by Chelsea Sikk. Janet-Maria Guzman scored one with Aracely Esquerra assisting. Taylor Lundquist scored the final goal for Willow without an assist.
Earlier in the week, Willow finished in a 1-1 tie with James Lick. Lundquist scored the only Ram goal off a Guzman assist.
The Rams were to host Mt. Pleasant on Feb. 7 for the final game of the season.
The Rams boys soccer team battled with Lincoln on Feb. 1 and took an early 2-0 lead, but the Lions caught up and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Willow Glen will travel to Santa Teresa on Feb. 8 for the final game of the season with a 3:15 p.m. start.
