Montenez, Gutierez get fourth at mat finals
By Kevin Sparrer
Matt Montenez and Jose Gutierez each had a big day on Feb. 11. And because of it, they have the opportunity to have a big weekend on Feb. 24-25.

The two Willow Glen wrestlers were among the top finishers at the Blossom Valley Athletic League wrestling championships held last Saturday at Mt. Pleasant. Montenez and Gutierez combined for five wins by fall, which was enough for each competitor to finish fourth in his weight class and qualify for the Central Coast Section championships.

The tournament begins on Feb. 24 at Independence and will conclude on Feb. 25 at Overfelt.

Gutierez finished fourth at 217 pounds after being pinned by Daniel Fuentez of Piedmont Hills in 1:52 of the first round in the third-place match. Prior to being pinned, Gutierez pinned Ryan Richards of Leigh in 1:43 in his third match of the day. His second match pitted Gutierez against Dan Shehan of Branham. Shehan won by pin at 2:22. Gutierez won his first match of the day, pinning Jesse Montenegro of Mt. Pleasant in only 1:19.

Along with Gutierez, Montenez finished fourth for Willow Glen at 162 pounds. Montenez dropped his final match to Paul Michael Davis of Prospect by pin in 1:33, but not before he pinned Peter Silva from Mt. Pleasant in 1:42 a match earlier. Montenez also pinned Eddie Haflich of Independence in 1:02. Montenez received a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket after falling to Davis earlier in the day in a 2-0 decision. Montenez won his first match against Elrick Orfanel of Evergreen Valley by pin in 2:55.

Bobby Lopez finished sixth at 142 pounds for Willow Glen in the BVAL tourney.

Earlier in the week, Willow Glen fell to Leigh 42-33 in the final dual match of the Santa Teresa Division season. Willow Glen won six of the 14 matches, four by pin.

Kyle Brown pinned in 2:24 at 132 pounds, Lopez won by fall at 3:45 at 142 pounds, Eliso Anaya pinned in 1:40 at 147s and Gutierez pinned Ryan Richards of Leigh in only 50 seconds at 217s.

Oswaldo Michale won an 8-6 decision at 127s, and Montenez had a forfeit win at 162s.

Willow Glen finished the season 1-6.
