Twelve candidates have filed intentions to run in San Jose's mayoral race to replace Ron Gonzales when his second term expires at the end of this year, city clerk Lee Price said.
The list of potential candidates, however, could narrow by March 10, the cutoff date to file nomination papers with signatures from at least 50 supporters. The filing is required in order to be included on the June 6 ballot.
So far, six candidates have put their names out in the public: council members Cindy Chavez, David Cortese and Chuck Reed; real estate investor Michael Mulcahy; J. Manuel Hererra, president of the East Side Union High School District school board; and David Pandori, a deputy district attorney and former councilman. Pandori is the most recent candidate to declare his intention to run.
The six other candidates are: Larry Flores, 44; John Candeias, 24, a student; Timothy Fitzgerald, a Green party candidate; George Fokos, 55, who formerly operated Willow Glen Automotive; Jose Hernandez; and Michael Macarelli, 42, a Valley Transportation Authority light rail operator.
Six candidates ran for San Jose mayor during the last election in 2002.
