Delmas Dog Park officially opened on Feb. 25. Located at the corner of Delmas and Park avenues, this canine haven offers 17,000 square feet of running space.
The park is linear, stretching out 400 feet, and is located next to the Vasona Light Rail Extension trackway.
Open from 7 a.m. to one hour past sunset, the park is fenced with a double-gated entrance. The walking path consists of decomposed granite with a bark-mulch dog area.
There are tables and benches for humans, along with drinking fountains and dog bowls.
"Mutt mitts" are also provided to encourage dog owners to keep the park clean by using them to pick up their pet's poop.
A designer working for the Valley Transportation Authority initially suggested the excess space might work for a dog park.
Working with the city of San Jose's Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services, the VTA constructed the park and is now turning it over to the parks department to operate and maintain.
Street parking is available on Delmas and Park avenues.
The Delmas Dog Park is the second canine park to open in District 3. Ryland Dog Park was the first. San Jose city parks manager Steve Roemer said District 3 may have up to four dog parks within the next few years, all on small plots throughout the district.
In District 6, the plan to create a dog park at Wallenberg Park on Curtner Avenue is still in the works, Roemer said.
