As if a ski week weren't enough, Bellarmine senior Daniel Summers will be taking some time for another vacation. Summers will be heading to Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield for the CIF State Wrestling Championships on March 3 and 4.
Summers qualified for the state championships by finishing second at 135 pounds at the Central Coast Section championships held Feb. 25 at Overfelt.
Summers fell in his last match to Adin Duenas of Gilroy in an 8-4 decision after winning four straight matches to reach the final round of the tournament. Zach Jimenez of Palma was the last competitor to fall to Summers before the finals. Summers pinned Jimenez 1:50 into the second round.
Summers defeated Evan Crockett of Silver Creek in a 12-0 major decision after pinning Eric Lopez of Harbor in 1:38 and Zac Eliot of Prospect in 3:46.
Joining Summers on his trip to the state championships is junior teammate Mitch Penrod. Penrod finished fourth at 152 pounds in the CCS tourney after making a strong comeback in the consolation bracket.
Penrod lost a 15-4 major decision to Markham Bertron of Oak Grove. His loss came after three wins into the consolation bracket. He bested Spencer Sevilla of Saratoga in a 3-1 decision and put down David Green of Wilcox with an 8-1 decision. In his first match in the consolation bracket, Penrod pinned Gus Flores of Monterey in 4:03.
His first loss came on a 7-1 decision against Mikey Rico of Silver Creek, who went on to take first in the tournament. Penrod pinned Josh Ramirez of San Benito in 1:32 and Michael Alpers of Fremont in 1:13 in his first two matches of the tournament.
Unfortunately, only two of Bellarmine's 14 wrestlers to compete in the CCS finals will go on to the state championships.
Eli Sanchez, a sophomore, came close to qualifying for state, finishing fifth at 140 pounds. But only the top four wrestlers in each weight class advance. Sanchez had six wins and two losses. He beat Jose Betancourt of Overfelt with a 3-2 decision for fifth place. His second loss came to Kurtis Ogasawara of Fremont by pin at 1:54. Sanchez had a four-win streak in the consolation bracket. His first loss came to eventual champ Armando Gonzales of Gilroy by a 13-1 major decision. Sanchez had opened by beating Seth Short of Palma with a 12-4 major decision.
