Willow Glen wins Bret Harte tourney title

Dylan Haysbert picked the right time to come through with his best game of the year for Willow Glen Middle School.

Haysbert ripped down 15 rebounds and poured in 18 points to lead the boys sixth-grade team to a 63-62 overtime win over St. Christopher's in the championship game of the Bret Harte Tournament. With the win, Willow Glen wrapped up the year with a 14-2 season record.

Haysbert was 4 for 5 at the free-throw line, including two charity throws with just two seconds left to play to give Willow Glen the overtime victory.

Mitch Ravizza was the scoring leader for the champs in the win over St. Chris, pitching in 21 points. He was also a force on the boards with eight rebounds.

Willow Glen had opened the tourney with a lopsided 52-12 win over host Bret Harte. Steven Osborne was the scoring leader for the winners with 12 points and Cole Murray joined him in double digits with 10 points. Jason De La Rocha supported with six points and added nine rebounds, and James Johnson chipped in with eight points.

Haysbert was the leader with 14 points and 13 boards in a 47-38 win over Castillero in the semifinals. Johnson supported with nine points and 11 rebounds and Todd Meeker contributed nine points and seven rebounds.

"What a great way to end the season," said Willow Glens coach Xavier De La Rocha.

Members of the squad were Meeker, Ravizza, Haysbert, Osborne, J. De La Rocha, Johnson, Bret Bigger, Murray, Andrew Macias, Jonathan Russo, Jared Manthang and Christian Scott.

USA 17 Soccer

The USA Seventeen Youth Soccer Academy, which trains elite players to compete at the top levels of the sport, is holding tryouts for boys and girls in the under 11 through under 18 age groups.

Tryouts will be held on March 4 for boys and March 5 for girls at Central Park in Santa Clara. Times are 9-11 a.m. for under-14 and under-15, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for under-16 and under-17 and 1-3 p.m. for under-18.
