Smith leads Willow Glen into race for Santa Teresa Division golf title
By Dick Sparrer
Bob Parker is keeping a watchful eye for any moving vans in the neighborhoods around Willow Glen High School.

It's not that the veteran Willow Glen coach is concerned about who's moving in, he just doesn't want to see anyone moving out. At least, not anyone on his high school golf team--he had enough of that last year.

The Rams won a championship in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League in 2004 and moved up to the rugged Mt. Hamilton Division last spring with high hopes.

But before the season even got under way, the No. 1 and No. 2 players on the Willow Glen squad moved, and Parker and his Rams were forced to take a young team into the one of the valley's toughest divisions.

The results were predictable. The Rams had a dismal 2-14 season and return to the Santa Teresa Division this spring.

Parker is looking for better results in the 2006 season--much better results.

Senior Tim Smith returned to the No. 1 spot for Willow Glen and is joined by veterans Andy Fujihara, a senior, and Dan Goldberg, a junior.

"The good news is that we have seven new faces, including four freshmen," said Parker.

Freshmen Robby Sisco and James Luna at playing in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions on the squad. Junior Nick Barbara is playing No. 4 with Fujihara at No. 5 and Goldberg, senior Ricky Green, sophomore Nick Thompson and freshmen Ryan Burbank and Joe Tornincasa competing for the No. 6 spot.

"We have three, maybe as many as five, players that will play at or a little below bogey golf," said Parker. "We're not a great team, but we're young and vastly improved over last year."

The coach is optimistic--as he has been every season in his 36-year coaching career at Willow Glen--as the Rams head into Santa Teresa Division play.

"If this group continues to improve, we might just be good enough to win the division again," said Parker, who looks at Piedmont Hills as a potential title threat. "Obviously, the biggest question is the competition within the league. In golf, especially the Santa Teresa Division, there isn't much of a track record to predict a team's future success."

The Rams were to open the league season on Monday against Prospect, weather permitting, and will face the Panthers again on March 8, 2:45 p.m., at San Jose Muni. Willow Glen collides with James Lick on March 13 at Spring Valley and meet the Comets on March 16 at Muni.

Willow Glen will face Piedmont Hills twice in a week on March 28 and March 30.

Parker is assisted by Paul Smith and Rob Sisco.
