Large turnout in the waters at Presentation
By Dick Sparrer
Marisa Watts Cozort has a problem. Presentation High School just opened its brand new swimming pool, and it's already overflowing with too many swimmers.

A problem? Maybe. But no one's hearing Cozort complain.

The Panthers had 110 swimmers come out for the spring season--not bad at a school of just 750 students. And while the Presentation coach may be scrambling to find enough suits and caps, she has just one word to describe the turnout ... "Amazing!"

"We encourage all who want to be a part of our team to join in the fun," said Cozort, in her seventh season as the Presentation coach. "With seven or eight workouts a week, including three at 6 a.m., we have over 110 girls who want to do their best, meet new people, feel good about themselves and bring their strengths to the team."

Topping the list of swimmers this spring are talented returners senior Jennifer Gong, juniors Emily Clarke and Kelley Oreglia and sophomore Danielle Gong.

Junior Carolyn Watts and freshman Maddie Takaki are newcomers expected to help the squad this year.

The Panthers posted a 3-4 record last year in the West Catholic Athletic League, arguably the finest in the Central Coast Section. Five of the eight schools in the league finished in the top 10 at the CCS finals in 2005.

Presentation opened league by swamping Sacred Heart Cathedral 133-29.

D. Gong and J. Gong each won two individual events and swam on two winning relay teams for the Panthers. D. Gong was tops in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.18 and the 200 individual medley in 2:09.73, and J. Gong took the 100 butterfly in 1:00.48 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.92. The two teamed with Takaki and Jenni Peters for a win in the 200 medley relay in 1:59.17, and they joined forces with Julia Still and Takaki to win the 400 free relay in 3:51.57.

Still added two wins in the 200 free in 2:01.34 and the 500 free in 5:26.36. Watts was first in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.75 and Kelley Gause took the 50 free in 27.20.

The Panthers also splashed past Sacred Heart Cathedral in junior varsity competition, winning 131-29. Freshman Danielle Medeiros won both the 200 and 500 events, and Marisa Lorion and Mandy Korpusik also recorded solid efforts for the Panthers.
