HSR awarded $1.3 million bid to bring trail into downtown

By Monica Heger

The Los Gatos Creek Trail project continues to make strides toward completion.

The San Jose City Council awarded HSR Inc. a $1.3 million contract on March 28 to complete Reach 4 of the trail. It will run about one-half mile along the creek between Lonus and Auzerais streets.

"This is a very exciting project that I've been working on since I took office five years ago," Councilman Ken Yeager said. "This is such an important link because it will lead us into downtown San Jose."

Construction of the trail is scheduled to begin June 2006 and should be completed by October 2007. Construction will include an asphalt concrete trail, retaining walls, storm drainage, street improvements, fitness course stations, mitigation planting and irrigation.

The Los Gatos Creek trail is an 11-mile paved trail that extends from the Lexington Reservoir through Los Gatos, Campbell and San Jose. Reach 4 is the second-to-last phase of the trail development and will begin the process of bringing the trail into downtown San Jose.

Reach 5 is the final phase and will connect the trail to the HP Pavilion and the Guadalupe River Trail. The Guadalupe River Trail will connect to the 400-mile Bay Trail.

"The trail systems are all coming together," Yeager said. "It's very exciting."
