7-Eleven is robbed
by man with gun
A masked man robbed a Willow Glen 7-Eleven at gunpoint on April 5.
According to San Jose police spokeswoman Gina Teeporten, the man entered the store at 2440 Almaden Road at 3:10 a.m., walked around the counter, pointed a handgun at the clerk and demanded the cash from the registers.
The man, described by the clerk as a white male in his early 20s, about
5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, took an undisclosed amount of cash from the two cash registers and fled on foot, according to police.
The man was last seen walking away from the convenience store toward Almaden Expressway wearing a gray knit ski mask, a black top, and black sweat pants with a white stripe down the side.
Winestyles draws a
crowd for opening
The new wine store WineStyles opened with a pop of the cork and more than 500 Willow Glen residents on March 11. Local winery Clos LaChance provided the wine tastings all day.
Wines at the shop are organized by taste "styles" and not by region, taking the guesswork out of selecting a wine that fits an individual's style or occasion.
The wine shop also offers wine-related merchandise and a selection of gift baskets that can be customized.
The Willow Glen location is owned and operated by Tom and Claire Martell, local residents and area developers.
WineStyles currently operates 45 franchise locations, with more than 102 stores open or in development across the United States.
Beverages & More slated for hearing
The San Jose Planning Commission will consider a conditional use permit and liquor license exceptions permit for a proposed Beverages & More on Lincoln Avenue at its April 26 public hearing. It is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in city hall council chambers.
Store co-founder Steve McLaren wants to locate in the former Barbarella space on Lincoln Avenue, next to Subway. McLaren wants to have a public drinking establishment (wine and beer tasting area) with off-site sales of alcohol.
The store will not open if both permits are not approved.
Reports, drawings, and documents for this project are on file and available for review, and a permit with recommendations will also be available for review during the week of the public hearing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at www.sanjoseca.gov/planning/hearings/.

Student brings gun
to middle school
An Ida Price Middle School eighth-grader brought a pistol to school on April 4, showing the gun and its bullets to two friends before administrators found out, according to the Cambrian School District.
A student who knew about the gun reported it to an adult, who then told the administrators. The Cambrian School District immediately contacted the San Jose Police Department. The student is currently being held at juvenile hall and has been suspended from the school pending an investigation and possible expulsion hearing, Cambrian Superintendent Barry Groves said.
"He said that he found it," Groves said. "The police tell me there was no intent to cause harm."
The district interviewed all students who knew about the gun and held a staff meeting at Ida Price Middle School. Every student was given a written notice to take home and the notice was also emailed to parents on Cambrian's email list. The district also notified the staff at all other schools in the district.
Parents, however, have voiced concerns about the safety of children at neighboring Fammatre Elementary School.
"This is the first time that anything like this has ever happened in the school district, to my knowledge," Groves said. "We consider Price a safe school."
