Presentation's Lettire tosses three shutouts

The Willow Glen Rams were limping along in the tough Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League baseball race with just three wins in their first nine games.
The best medicine for their ailments would be a couple of victories over Westmont when the Rams and Warriors met in a two-game series last week. And Willow Glen came through with just what the doctor ordered.
The Rams edged Westmont 4-3 to open the week, then blanked the Warriors 7-0 to push their league record to 5-6 and their season ledger to just over the .500 at 7-6.
The two victories came just in time for the Rams, who face first-place Leland for two games this week. Willow Glen was to host the Chargers on April 11 and will visit Leland on April 13, 3:30 p.m.
Senior hurler Jose Torres tossed a 3-hit shutout at Westmont last Friday to lead the Rams to a 7-0 win in the game shortened to five innings because of April showers. He now sports a 1-1 mound record.
Greg Garrity doubled to lead a 5-hit attack for the Rams.
Willow Glen broke open a scoreless game with seven runs in the home half of the fourth inning.
It took two runs in the seventh inning for the Rams to pull out the tight 4-3 win over Westmont to open the week.
Willow Glen had scored twice in the top of the third to take the lead in the game, but the Warriors answered with two of their own in the home half of the frame to tie it. It remained 2-2 until the seventh when the Rams rallied for two more. Westmont picked up a run in the bottom of the frame, but came up a run short.
Jason Jeffery singled and doubled to lead a 10-hit attack for the Rams. Kyle Lunquist was the winning pitcher for Willow Glen, evening his season record at 2-2.
WG girls fall
Willow Glen managed to squeeze in one game between raindrops last week, but lost a 5-2 decision to Piedmont Hills. The loss left the Rams 1-3 in the Santa Teresa Division and 4-6 for the year.
Michele McCollum was cruised along with a shutout through four innings before the Pirates unloaded for five runs in the top of the fifth. Willow Glen had scored two in the bottom of the fourth to take a short-lived lead.
Jeanette Sulay had two hits to lead a 5-hit attack for the Rams.
Willow Glen will try to get back on the winning track this week. The Rams were to host first-place Evergreen Valley on April 11 and will head to Del Mar for a 3:30 p.m. game on April 17.
Rams swamp Cards
Kate Waggoner, Courtney Buchanan, Kelly Greene and Jackie Anderson were each double winners and each one competed on two winning relay teams to lead the Willow Glen girls swimming team to a rousing 104-40 win over Mt. Pleasant last week.
The victory helped the Rams improve to 3-1 in the Santa Teresa Division dual meet season.
Waggoner raced to wins in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:29.00 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:25.55, and Buchanan was first in the 100 butterfly in 1:22.60 and the 200 individual medley in 2:52.87. Greene sprinted to wins in the 50 free in 28.82 and the 100 free in 1:02.47, and Anderson was a winner in the 500 free in 6:05.68 and the 100 backstroke in 1:08.29.
Lindsay Tait helped the Rams to a clean sweep in the individual events with a win in diving, running up 141.60 points.
Waggoner, Buchanan and Greene teamed with Anderson for a win in the 200 medley relay in 2:06.98, and they joined with Jamie Furtado for a victory in the 200 free relay in 2:00.89. Anderson got together with Furtado, Kim Helmbold and Elizabeth Bootrich to win the 400 free relay in 4:41.11.
Josh Dombro finished first in the 100 back in 1:21.33, but the Willow Glen boys lost 91-67 to unbeaten Mt. Pleasant. The Rams are now 2-2 in the division.
Volleyball split
Junior middle blocker Tobin Chase buried 19 kills to lead the Willow Glen boys volleyball team to a hard-earned 25-22, 16-25, 20-25, 25-15, 15-11 win over Westmont last week.
The win came just days after the Rams had dropped a 25-22, 28-26, 25-18 decision to Leigh, despite a match-high 13 kills by Chase.
The Rams are now 7-3 in the Mt. Hamilton Division and 14-10 for the year. Willow Glen will host Branham and April 12 and Gunderson on April 13 in a pair of 7 p.m. varsity matches before heading into spring break.
Smith leads Rams
Tim Smith knocked it around for an 8-over par 26 at the Rancho Del Pueblo golf course to lead the Willow Glen golf team to a 209-247 win over Andrew Hill last week. The Rams are now 7-2 in the Santa Teresa Division.
Panthers rolling along
Senior hurler Jamie Lettire fired three consecutive shutouts last week to lead the Presentation girls softball teams to wins over Salinas (3-0) and Alisal (12-) in the Steinbeck Tournament in Salinas and to a 12-0 victory over Sacred Heart Prep in the West Catholic Athletic League.
The three wins helped the Panthers improve their record to 9-0 for the year, seven of them by shutout. They are also 4-0 in the WCAL, blanking all four league opponents.
Lettire, who has won all nine games for the Panthers this spring, tossed a 1-hit shutout in a 12-0 five-inning win over Alisal last weekend. The Panthers rallied for five runs in the first and seven in the second to give Lettire an early 12-0 lead. Sophomore Montana Maggetti doubled in a pair of runs in the win.
Lettire flipped a 2-hit shutout in the win over the Salinas. Soph Anna Canino doubled twice to lead a 6-hit attack for the Panthers.
Lettire struck out 12 and fired a five-inning no-hitter in the 12-0 win over Sacred Heart Prep. Senior Amanda Moriarty singled and tripled to lead the 12-hit Presentation assault.
