Joan Warager

Joan Warager died peacefully in her sleep at her Willow Glen home on May 7, following a stroke. She was 69.

"She had the strongest spirit of anyone I have ever known," says her friend Sheryl Ruth.

Warager, known for her love of children and family, worked for more than 20 years at KNTV, Channel 11, where she served as executive assistant for the ABC affiliate beginning in the early '60s.

"I've never know anyone who was loved by more people and generated more devotion from others," says longtime friend Stew Park.

Warager was born in Cutbank, Mont., on Aug. 2, 1936. She had lived in California since the 1940s.

Her husband, Leonard Warager, says, "Joan so loved magical places and did teas for children for years in her Willow Glen home, [so] it seemed appropriate to celebrate her life in a garden."

Warager is survived by her husband, brother Larry Miller, son and daughter-in-law Tim and Denise Ammann and granddaughter Sarah, stepson David Warager and his wife Laurie, and their children Meghan and Brian Warager, stepdaughter Patti and Garth Johnston, and their children Ethan and Andrew, and niece Nicky Cunningham. Her sister Dianna Rassler and her son Tony Ammann died previously.

Services will be May 17 from 3 to 6 p. m. at Hakone Gardens, 21000 Big Basin Way, Saratoga. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Pathways Hospice, 585 N. Mary Ave, Sunnyvale, CA 94085 or Hospice of the Valley, 1150 S. Bascom Ave., San Jose, CA 95128.
