Subway, 7-Eleven
hit by robberies
The Subway at 699 Curtner Ave. was robbed on May 8 after a paying customer pointed a gun at the sandwich shop's employee and demanded money.
The man entered the shop around 9 p.m. and ordered a sandwich and a drink, according to San Jose police spokeswoman Gina Tepoorten. He paid and sat down to eat the meal. When he finished eating he walked up to an employee behind the counter, pointed a handgun at the employee and demanded the cash in the register, police said.
The robber fled on foot with the money.
The man is described as a black male in his 20s, 5 feet 6 inches tall, approximately 150 pounds, wearing a dark baseball cap and a blue hooded sweatshirt.
The day before, on May 7, at 12:47 a.m., a nearby store was also the scene of a robbery. Two individuals walked into the 7-Eleven at 1880 Curtner Ave. on the edge of Willow Glen. The first man approached the counter with a handgun and demanded cash from the store clerk, Tepoorten said.
The clerk fled to a back room but saw one man grab a couple of cigarette cartons, while a second man took some beers. When the men left the store, the clerk called the police.
The thieves are described as white males between the ages of 20 and 30, who wore hooded sweatshirts and bandannas on top of their heads and over their mouths. One man was approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall. The other man is 6 feet1 inch tall.
Anyone with information about either crime is asked to contact the San Jose Robbery Unit at 408.277.4166 or report tips anonymously on the Crime Stoppers line, 408.947.STOP.
Code enforcement
inspectors on call
The San Jose Department of Planning, Building and Code Enforcement is launching a six-month pilot project to have code enforcement inspector on call on Saturdays.
The Saturday inspector will be available between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. through San Jose's call center. The inspector will respond to emergency and priority customer complaints including unpermitted tree removal and trimming and sewage overflow. These individuals will also conduct inspections on illegal auto repair, unpermitted construction and construction during prohibited hours.
The move comes as welcome relief for the Willow Glen community, which has been struggled without weekend code enforcement for years. Several of the area's illegal tree removals have occurred on the weekends when no code enforcement officer was available. Instead, residents had to rely on the police for enforcement.
The San Jose call center can be reached at 408.535.3500.

Identification needed
to register to vote
Due to changes in the federal law that took effect on Jan. 1, Santa Clara County residents are now required to provide proof of their identity when registering or re-registering to vote.
Residents must include either a California driver's license number or California identification card when completing voter registration forms. Registrants who do not have either of these must include the last four digits of their Social Security number, if they have one. Registrants without any of these forms of identification can still register to vote without providing any additional information.
The Registrar of Voters' Office will make every effort to contact voters to collect any missing information. Identification numbers must be verified against state records before voters are added to the registration list. Voters whose registration cannot be verified prior to Election Day will be able to cast a provisional ballot and provide the missing information when they vote.
The deadline for registering or re-registering to vote for the June primary is May 22.
The new regulations allows voter registration information to be verified with California's new statewide voter registration database that was mandated by the federal Help America Vote Act of 2002.
For more information contact the Registrar of Voters' Office at 408.299.8683 or 408.282.3095 to reach someone in Spanish.
Freshmen welcome
in May at WGHS
The "Freshman Welcome," a two-hour event at Willow Glen High School, is designed to help incoming students become acquainted with the campus before the fall. The school also showcases its art, science, sports and music programs.
"We want to make the transition smoother for the students, in particular for those who didn't go to middle school in the neighborhood," said Teri Kane, an alumna and parent volunteer who came up with the idea four years ago after attending a similar event at the University of Arizona. Exposing the students to the wide range of activities in the school gives them a jump-start on ways to get involved, she said.
While the program is meant to help students feel more at home, it also provides equal opportunity for parents and students to learn about what the school offers and a chance to speak with teachers and administrators.
The Willow Glen High School's fourth annual "Freshman Welcome" will take place May 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 2001 Cottle Ave., room W102. For more information, contact Kane at 408.266.1644 or Debbie Bishop at 408.266.1351 or via email at wghsvolunteer@sbcglobal.net if invitations are not received.
