The Willow Glen Resident ran a feature story on May 17, "Danna family has thrived on growing," about Dominic Danna, who was recognized by the Western Growers Association, which presented him with its 2005 Award of Honor. He was also recognized by the city of San Jose, which recognized the 95-year-old and his family with a commendation for their work in the valley's orchard history.
We regret the family took issue with some points in the story, particularly our singling out Dominic Danna for credit the family says should have included Danna's two brothers Peter Danna and Stephen F. (Steve) Danna Sr. as well as other members of the family.
In addition, we did get several facts wrong, and these should be corrected:
* The Danna family did not develop orange flesh honeydews;
* Peter Danna is Dominic Danna's brother, not his cousin;
* Dominic Danna's sons worked alongside their father, their uncle Pete and their cousins, Leo and Dan;
* Marian Orlando was from Berryessa area of San Jose. Rose (Spano) Danna was visiting the Orlandos with her father, Joe Spano, who grew vegetables in Arvada, Colo.;
* Dominic Danna met his future wife Rose (Spano) Danna in 1938. They married in 1940. After they were married, she worked seasonally, along with other members of the family.
