56 condos on Almaden Road get approval from the city
By Mayra Flores De Marcotte
A planned development that will include 56 condominiums near Almaden and Malone roads got the green light at the San Jose planning director's hearing.
The 2.3-acre parcel at 1992 Almaden Road is home to four single-family residences that will be torn down.
The property was already approved for rezoning by the San Jose Planning Commission in a 4-1 vote Oct 26.
Single-family homes, condominiums, apartment projects and the Guadalupe River surround the site. Developer Olson Co. plans to construct seven three-story buildings that will reach 40 feet in height. The units will be designed as two- to three-bedroom units with a two-car attached garage.
The developer plans to remove 36 ordinance trees and 65 non-ordinance trees. In their place, 62 24-inch box trees and 40 15-gallon trees will be planted.
In addition to the replacement trees, the developer will make a $41,700 donation either to San Jose Beautiful or Our City Forest.
Although no residents attended the planning director's hearing on May 30, city planner Rebekah Ross said residents did voice some concern to her about the current condition of the site.
"We have spoken to the developers and have strongly encouraged them to clean up the site," Ross said.
