Consider using senior
centers for co-ops

I have lived in Willow Glen for 30 years and know that the closeness of Albertsons is necessary for seniors so they can walk. It is also important for young people so they can save gas.

But with the closure of Albertsons, many of us will have to drive or depend on another shop.

The co-op idea is great ("Residents looking for a way to start cooperative grocery," June 14) and the senior centers are ideal for this community need.

Surely, the use of those centers for a co-op could serve the city of San Jose well. What better use for the taxes we pay?

Many Willow Glen residents garden and could sell or trade their extra produce. It's for the public good.

Pine Avenue is a road
that needs attention

Thank you Alma Taylor for your SpeakOut letter ("Why do some streets get all the attention?" June 21).

As a longtime resident of Willow Glen, I have been trying to convince the city of the need to resurface the heavily traveled stretch of Pine Avenue between Lincoln and Bird avenues for years. There are extreme cases of "ponding" up and down the street, and it seems the severity of the situation would be cause to prioritize Pine Avenue for resurfacing sooner than later.

The last time I checked, there were no plans for such work. The sitting polluted water not only contributes to gradual crumbling of the asphalt, it also poses a health risk in terms of mosquito breeding. Hopefully someone from the city will read this and decide to take a second look.
