Selfless volunteers
can be recognized

Know a family who is always out in the neighborhood picking up garbage or pulling weeds? Or a neighbor who is a regular at volunteer events?

Residents have a chance to nominate these individuals for the "La Familia Award."

Since 1990, the award has been given to 15 Silicon Valley Hispanic families that have demonstrated exemplary commitment and dedication to the community through volunteerism.

To nominate a family, complete the three-part nomination form at www.hfsv.org/LaFamiliaNominationform2006.pdf.

Nominations are due by July 14 and can be submitted to La Familia Committee of the Hispanic Charity Ball, 60 S. Market St., Suite 1000, San Jose 95113 or via email to lafamilia@hfsv.org.

Association takes
ballpark position

North Willow Glen Neighborhood Association members have debated the pros and cons of the proposed baseball stadium near the San Jose Diridon Caltrain Station for months. At their monthly meeting in June, neighbors voted to oppose a ballpark at that location, just north of the older neighborhood.

By a show of hands, and a few people who voted by email, the vote was 12 to six to oppose placing the ballpark near Diridon station. The neighborhood association is not opposing the ballpark, members said, just the location.

Neighborhood association vice president Clark Williams said the association thought it was important to gauge the membership's stance on the ballpark. The vote will guide the association's future advocacy on the subject.

Death on Jerome
labeled a murder

San Jose are investigating the death of a 22-year-old Hispanic woman in a Gardner home on Jerome Street. Authorities are now labeling the death a murder, according to police spokeswoman Gina Tepoorten.

On June 11, a person who lived in the home returned to find Claudia Luna unconscious. The resident called the police, who responded at 11:39 a.m. to the 300 block of Jerome Street, near Prevost Street. San Jose fire personnel pronounced Luna dead when they arrived.

Police are not disclosing how Luna was killed, as the investigation is ongoing, Tepoorten said. Police are interviewing Luna's associates, family members and other people associated with the house. Neighbors said the house had generated a lot of foot traffic in recent months, which has stopped since the death.

Police are unsure of whether Luna lived at the residence, but Tepoorten discounted rumors Luna overdosed on drugs. Further, she said police found no evidence of a working methamphetamine lab at the house.

Anyone with additional information should contact San Jose police homicide unit at 408.277.5283.
