Camp Cinequest will
offer scholarships

Cinequest is offering 10 scholarships to its first Camp Cinequest, a weeklong summer camp for seventh- and eighth-graders who are passionate about film.

Camp Cinequest is the newest venture of Cinequest's Youthquest program. The camp runs from July 31 to Aug. 4 at San José State University and costs $425.

Students will learn to brainstorm and develop stories and turn narratives into screenplays. They will also learn about the technical aspects of film such as lighting, shooting, sound and editing.

The student films will premiere at an outdoor screening at Cinema San Pedro on Aug. 16.

Scholarships cover the entire cost and are available to any student on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, email camp@cinequest.org.

Caltrain team walks
for suicide prevention

Caltrain is asking passengers to chip in with a few spare dollars to help a three-member railroad team raise funds for rail suicide prevention one morning during the week of July 10.

A conductor, a transit police officer and a veteran locomotive engineer--all Amtrak employees who work on the Caltrain line--have a combined goal of raising $3,000 for the "Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk" July 22-23 in San Francisco. The 20-mile dusk-to-dawn trek raises funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The team is still short of its goal. The members have collected about $1,750.

Caltrain wants to participate in the walk to help bring the issue of suicide and depression "out of the darkness," educating people that the best way to prevent suicide is through early detection, diagnosis and treatment of depression and mood disorders.

To contribute, visit www.theover night.org, click on "Support a Participant," then select the "San Francisco walk" and the "Caltrain Amtrak" team to find the individual members.

Water is the lifeline
that connects us all

The Santa Clara Valley Water District released Water in the Santa Clara Valley: A History, an updated edition to the book that was written in the 1970s.

The new edition is more comprehensive and readable, water district spokesman Mike Di Marco said. The book touches on how water helped the valley's row crops and orchards become a booming economic and technological industry.

"When you read it, you feel really part of our community. If there's one thing that connects us, it's water and our need for it," Di Marco said.

The water district contracted with former water district employee Cheryl Wessling to write the book. The 284-page book is available at San Jose and Santa Clara County libraries. For more information, visit www.valleywater.org.
