Photography takes top honors at Better Newspapers contest
The California Newspaper Publishers Association's Better Newspapers Contest has honored the Willow Glen Resident and its sister newspapers for outstanding journalism in 2005.
Photographer Vicki Thompson captured first place for her photo essay "Upper Cut," which chronicled the life of professional kickboxer Gary Owens. The newspaper also received a certificate of achievement for the sports feature "An Ace" by staff writer Meghan O'Hare.
According to the newspaper association's website, "The Better Newspapers Contest is an annual newsroom competition that is sponsored by CNPA for the purpose of recognizing the most outstanding journalistic achievements published by daily and weekly California newspapers in one calendar year."
Awards were given out at a luncheon July 15.
